So I was out with this Australian kid last night and he said Virgin phones in Australia have a feature where you can program your phone to not be able to dial certain numbers from like 12:00 am to 9:00 am. It is a drunken-booty-call prevention technology. Or preventing ex-ex-ex-girlfriend rants, etc.

I think it is hilarious - and totally a thing Virgin would do.

Man, why is our country so behind in mobile phone technology?
 
That is true. It was on the news a month or two ago.

America has always been behind Europe when it comes to cell phone technology.

The cell phone craze here in America was present in England about 7 years ago. America is behind and I can't figure out why actually.

Good call. It toally forgot to mention Australia. The wife told me that when she traveled abroad to Europe and Australia how much further ahead they were in regards to cell phone technology.

In England people pay up to $5000 a year to purchase numbers like 444-4444, 555-5555 etc.

I guess over there having a number like that is considered a status symbol.

Most existing phones will allow you to program incoming call options. Not with the temporal window Virgin (et al) is using overseas, just per number -- a blocked call list. This seems like a simple extension of that technology.


As for behind the times and cell-phones. Yes, the US is way behind in deployment of G4 enhanced phones,, the RFID enhanced phones and all other "cellular" technology. Though the ease of using a land-line for most calls in the US is part of the barrier to deployment, the other side of the issue is the lack of a strong POTS infrastructure in many parts of Asia / China. Japan gets theirs as they are often the originators of technology. Australia benefits from proximity to the Pacific Rim. Lastly, with a higher cost for POTS (land-line) use in many countries like the UK (charges accrue for local calls, even to the house next-door) cells are perceived as less expensive. As a result, there is easier acceptance of any add-on costs for enhanced features in phones and services - this drives development and deployment onward.

So what you are saying is that being a complete idiot is a status symbol in Europe. Go figure....
