OCBuckWife

I am the evil monkey in your closet
Ok, so I'm not really going to try to Bonsai a BUCKEYE *fixed* tree, but I would like to try it in a giant container in my back yard so my bunnies can enjoy the shade(eventually). I understand the seeds are edible after some preparation and I wonder what sort of flavor they would provide to some other concoctions we make. The flowers are pretty too.

Can someone living in Ohio send me some seeds off the ground next time a local tree pops em out? Bonus greenies if the seeds come from OSU grounds! If it requires more than sticking em in a small padded envelope and stamping it, I will gladly PayPal over some shipping money.

I would rather cultivate something someone gave me, then just buy the seeds. It's just a habit I have gotten into and I prefer it. Watching the plant grow always reminds of me of where/who I got the seed or cutting from.

Here's some directions for growing one from seed....

and some more

Only recently fallen nuts are viable for planting. This means the lucky buckeye that you?ve been carrying around since the Ohio State Buckeyes won the 1968, or 2002 National Championship, is not a candidate for germination!

Good luck. I have a Buckeye plant in my backyard, it's not an Ohio Buckeye, but it's the same family and it produces Buckeyes. It's a little better suited to this part of the country.

Thanks for the links! I figure I shouldn't have too much trouble, I will be attempting a container growth so the conditions will be extremely easy for me to manipulate for maximum opportunity.

I don't think I have much to worry about with drying of the seed. I figure a week max from some friendly BPer picking up a seed casing with a seed inside to it being in a big pot of dirt in my house for germination! I Hope!

My buckeyes aren't 'ripe' until autumn...

Yeah, that's normal seed season. It's also planting season so it works out well. :)

Buckeye seeds have usually ripened by September and are falling from the trees till early October. Collect your seeds from the ground soon after they fall and remove them from the husk. Take extra care not to let them dry out. Do not pull seed pods from the tree before the Buckeyes have ripened.

Although anyone thinking about sending me a couple probably shouldn't remove em from the husk, that should help keep em from drying out for the extra couple days it takes to mail em off.

Sorry, but doesnt Cali have strick laws about bringing seeds/plants into
the state?
We don't want any Buckeyes getting in trouble.

Not as much when it's container gardening, no. I've ordered in seeds from around the world and not had any problems.
