Conspiracy theorist in me...think he did something like this intentionally, knowing he'd get fired rather than have to quit? Like maybe he's just done with the whole be mediocre in a good conference thing and he was looking for a quick way out. What he said doesn't seem like "slip of the tongue" type material to me, having been in the public eye as long as he has, you pretty much have to say something like that on purpose.
