Blackwell Guilty - Any Thoughts?

Former OSU professor Roger Blackwell has been found guilty of insider-trading. It will be interesting to see if he gets any jail time. I never had him for class, however, are there any thoughts from former students on BP?

I heard that in his statement to the judge he mentioned that he is about to be baptized by Jim Tressel, So the Judge told him don't worry about it.:wink2:

I don't mean to stir up the pot, I just find that whole issue to be fucking hilarious.

I never met Blackwell, but when I was an academic adviser at Fisher he was probably the most popular professor at the college. All of the Marketing students wanted to take his classes and there was always a large wait list.

Of course, he always took his classes out to dinner at the end of the quarter. I guess we now know where he got all of the money to afford that.

Too bad we now have a building on campus named after the guy. Kind of embarrassing.

I had Blackwell for Marketing 650 back in the fall of '88. He was a great teacher when it came to getting you to think about a product in terms of how to sell it to someone. I would say he always seemed a little too high on himself but there were very few classes that I enjoyed as much. He was very entertaining and I never felt like I wanted to go to sleep in his class (which is more than I can say for a lot of professors).

Persoanlly, I didn't like the guy or his class. However, I'm an accounting guy and sitting through marketing tended to piss me off, so it's hard to say whether it was him or the garbage we were stufying.

I was an Accounting/Finance guy and had MKT 650 in '97. Anyway, I sat in the second row of his calss and liked to answer his questions. He asked the class once what we should do with social security and I was answered 'let me invest the money myself'. I had the moneyball answer that day and felt like a stud. Now look at him and what he got charged for. I suck.

Still, I liked him because he was all about opportunity, and he was tough. I live up the road from him in Arlington and saw him walking with his ex-wife down my street when I was snow-blowing the drive. He waved....just a shame to see a guy like this go out this way.

Maybe there's a crook inside me waiting to get out but I can't imagine how difficult it would be to not to tell your friends and family of a merger where they stand to make millions of dollars.

That has to be tough.

I just received the following note from my good friend, Joe Alutto. Sheesh, I can't figure this out. He's too smart to try to do this and too rich to need to.

As a supporter of the Fisher College community, I wanted to update you on
the situation with Professor Roger Blackwell. As you are probably aware,
the SEC filed criminal charges against Professor Blackwell earlier this
year. On Monday, the jury found him guilty on several counts of insider
trading and conspiracy. He announced his retirement from the Fisher
College of Business, effective immediately. We respect the jury's decision
and regret this ending to an otherwise accomplished career.

I had a similar experience in the same course in the Spring of '86. For an accounting/finance guy, marketing was a necessary evil that I had to take, but it wasn't as painful as I had expected because he made it interesting most of the time.

Bastard gave me a B+, though...
