Black kids turned away from Philadelphia pool

... i had to check the url twice to make sure it wasn't from the onion. are we absolutely certain these kids didn't walk into some real world truman show or something? some after affect from the manhattan project? a portal to the 1800's perhaps?

Hardly a time portal to the 1800's. Growing up in Dayton and having a grandparent who worked for NCR, one of the delights was the use of the employee's park, Old River. A man made moat created an island for the main picnic area. There was minature golf, tennis courts, softball diamonds, canoe and row boat rentals, but best of all was the huge circular swimming pool. The park was open to all NCR employees, their family and guests (up to two per card and a card was issued to each member of an employee's direct family (i.e. one for a spouse, and one for each child.)

Strangely, the definition of employee didn't include blacks. Limited to jobs as cooks and janitors before WWII and probably afterwards, they were not allowed to use Old River except on July 5th of each year. On that day the park would be open to black employees only. That night the pool was drained, scrubbed and refilled and the park opened again to white employees only. The park, like the rest of NCR, has now closed, but I know this was the practice while I was in college in the 60's.

That's happened to me before, and I'm black my damn self. They probably got kicked out of somewhere and decided to take it out on the closest people they saw...they think its proving their manhood by suckerpunching someone from behind. Cowards.

Complexion:

4: overall aspect or character.

Don't be so niggardly in interpreting their intended meaning.

Did that #4 definition come before or after the one about skin color in your dictionary?

'Articulate' does not necessarily equate to, say, 'thoughtful'.

interesting. though. im sorry. this isnt 1960s dayton. this is 2009 america. few in dayton today could relate to the blatant racism you discuss, rather the subconcious and subtle racism we see today is more prevelant. then again we also see an amount of reverse racism that could only have been dreamed of 40 years ago. im one who doesnt put much stock in how aa/catholics/jews were treated 40, 70, 100 years ago in this country rather how it might/and does impact society today...
