Colin Kaepernick took over starting quarterback duties for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills.

Kaepernick’s season debut didn’t go so well. In the 45-16 loss, he completed just 13 of his 29 attempts for 187 yards and a score, adding another 66 yards on eight carries. Not terrible fantasy-football production, but bad enough to get the 49ers whipped and reignite a potential quarterback controversy.

One Bills player unloaded Kaepernick after the performance in an interview with Bleacher Report’s Tyler Dunne:

“Done.”

“Terrible.”

“More a distraction than a contributing member of the team.”

Buffalo cornerback Stephon Gilmore put his name behind a quote and was a tad nicer about his reaction:

We wanted to do everything we could to make him throw the ball. I mean, he’s an athlete. You can’t take that from him. But when it comes to passing the ball, he can’t really throw. …We took advantage of that.

After suffering through weeks of ineffectiveness by Blaine Gabbert and making a change, it’s hard to imagine the 49ers will bench Kaepernick after one game. It’s worth seeing what he has and if he can improve, and more important than anything to remember just how bad the team around him is at most spots.

Quotes from Bills players, anonymous or not, won’t change San Francisco’s mind. It sure makes for some interesting post-game chatter, though. Kaepernick and the 49ers welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to town in Week 7.
