He did not redshirt, he was academically ineligible as a freshman. He will only have one year of eligibility left, but can apply to regain the "lost" year if he has made enough academic progress. I'm fairly certain this would require him to graduate before getting that year back.

It's never good to see a player's career end, but this opens up more scholarship space for better players.

I'd bet he was kind of forced out.
