Guys, I stand corrected. I did not realize that things had been so bad when he arrived. I was wrong and evaluated him unfairly. Thanks for your posts.

Maybe there should be something like the British Football (soccer) system. As I understand it the worst teams play each other and winner of that circuit gets to move up to the next level. Imagine a football conference with Indiana, Duke, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Baylor, Kansas, call it the Big Doormat...

5. Saluting Bill Snyder: Truth be told, the media as a group probably won't be shedding a tear seeing the veteran K-State coach step down. Leon Lett was more media friendly. The perpetually dour Snyder could make Lloyd Carr seem like Kelly Ripa. But you can't lose sight of what Snyder did taking one of the worst football programs in the country and turning it into a top-10 program.

The names I'm hearing for the vacancy are OU D-coordinator Brent Venables, a former K-State star and one of the country's top recruiters, USF coach Jim Leavitt, Dana Dimel, Bob Elliott and Texas DC Gene Chizik. Also don't be surprised if Rick Neuheisel and Mike Price's names get kicked around some here. Snyder made this a good job and it doesn't appear like there will be anywhere near the number of plum vacancies this offseason as there were last year.

I don't know whether any of these names are realistic or not, but Mike Price being hired at KSU would be disasterous for struggling Colorado and Nebraska.

How pathetic is it that "struggling" refers to the 2 of the best teams in the Big12 North?

Much as I despise the Badgers, Barry Alvarez belongs in any discussion of the best turnarounds in CFB history. In the 5 years before he took over, UW went 14-42 (1-10 in '88, 2-9 in '89) and in his 4th year he got his first of three Rose Bowl wins. Wisky may not have had the longterm futility that KSU did over their history, but the Badgers were literally the worst team in the nation before Alvarez became head coach.

(edit: I see BA was actually mentioned already, but he still gets my vote.)

Not over a 60-year period, maybe, but for the latter half of the 80s, Wisconsin was right there with them. Both Alvarez and Snyder took over within a year of each other, and both had their first winning seasons in their 4th year on the job.

If we're going to mention Alvarez, we might mention Bobby bowden... FSU was pretty rotten also-- also with little or no tradition... , but its been a while back now... that and you can argue that the top end for FSU has been higher than Wisky and K-State.

Another good one... probably do need to cut these down to modern times or else someone is going to point out how bad Michigan sucked before Francis Schmidt got there...


And of course, by "before" I mean before, since, now and forever.
