Biggest upset of all time?

Not true, hasn't App St. beaten Wake Forest?

True. APP State improved to 7-36-1 against top-tier teams since 1978, the previous six victories all over Wake Forest, and took home a $400,000 check from Michigan to boot.

I thought it was the first time a 1-A team lost to a 1-AA team, but it is the first time a 1-AA team has beaten an AP TOP 25 1-A team, an important tidbit I accidentally omitted. my bad.

I know what you are saying - scUM very well may be overrated, but as ESPN has shown ad nauseum, never before has a 1-A team lost to a 1-AA team.

Given scUM's status in the college FB world, how is this not the biggest upset in college football history? What would your biggest upset be? Not questioning your argument, i am just curious what is a bigger than what we saw this weekend.

Not to take anything away from App State, who is a great team, but for a "perceived" top-5 team to lose at home to a team w/ 25% less scholarships?

Never before has a "Ranked" 1-A team lost to a 1-AA team.

If Michigan isn't "ranked" at the end of the season... then its really a non issue. (Though, part of that will be the loss to App State... if they go .500... they still wouldn't be ranked at seasons end most likely... even with that loss... )

Been trying to wrap my head around where App State would be if it were in I-A. They apparently finished 53rd in the Sagarin Ratings last year (44th in the ELO chess BCS version). Saturday evening, I randomly guessed that they were probably around the 50th best team in the country. (just a quick note... I haven't been on here since Friday... and...so I haven't gotten to every thread on this... sorry if this point has been made) So... if we can say that App State is around #50... what upsets have there been before on that scale? Unfortunately for App State... they get to work over more no name chumps... at least until the playoffs.

At any rate... the names involved make it a huge upset... but... just flashed to 2004 Sagarin ratings for fun... that year 6 I-AA teams were ranked ahead of Nebraska.

YSU, btw, finished at #71 (Florida International was #179 of #241)

Now... having said all that... Michigan sucking is bad for business... and... I kind of hope they suck the rest of the year, this year and get their shit back together soon. I'd hate to think Ohio State beating them is no big deal.

it will always be a big deal to me .

I hear you...from a national perspective, this loss only lends credence to all Big-10 bashers who had a field day after last season's bowl games.

I wouldn't mind them having a very bad record for 1 season, just to break their bowl streak.

It's been reported a few places that this was Carr's last year regardless. The consensus appeared to be that Carr, with this team, would win a Big 10 title and then he'd retire on his own terms with a handpicked successor.

That said, I wouldn't mind Michigan having a losing record for this one season, at least to end all their nifty steaks for winning seasons, bowl appearances, etc ... and to keep Lloyd around for another year, since he may be inclined to stick around to correct the big black mark on his resume.

I am not sure how this loss can be defined. USA vs Russia was not in Russia. This was in the big house with 100K+ fans going against them. It was against a team that has a least 4 if not 5 preseason ALL Americans. Not many recruits under 3+ stars. It was a picture perfect day and no weather issues. I just could not imagine OSU losing last year to YSU with such high hopes for the season. One thing is for sure it could not have happened to a better team and sure a "True Michigan Man" like Jim H had to be laughing all the way from Stanford. Hard to believe Carr used to outcoach Cooper on game day.

I think I've finally figured out what a "Michigan Man" is:

---

"I think everything's overblown -- when you do good there's too much praise and when you do bad, there's too much blame. [...] These kids are talented and we've had a lot of success here over the years and our record with All-Americans, All-Big Ten players and pro players bears that out. The same thing's going to happen again. ... We're fine."

-- Ron English speaking about the defense, August 7, 2007
U-M not crying over defense; English: We've got talent to fill holes

---

Reporter: "Is team speed an issue at all after the loss on Saturday and is that something that you and the coaches talked about?"

Coach Carr: "No."

-- Lloyd Carr post-App St. press conference, September 4, 2007
Scout.com: Monday Presser Transcript (Lloyd Carr)

---

"I don't think the score was very indicative of how we played. I believe we have a football team now."

-- Jim Harbaugh, following Stanfords 45-17 thumping at the hands of UCLA in his debut.

I realize now why the official head-wear of Michigan State and Detroit Lions football is the brown paper bag.

1980 USA vs. Russia - I don't care where it was played. (I know it was played in Lake Placid, but that's not the point.) It was 20-25 college kids who had been together for 6-8 months vs. 20-25 NHL-caliber Soviets who had been together for many years. I like to compare it this way: I'll give you all of the college football players. You can't contact any of them, yet, though. After the BCS National Championship game, you can start getting your team together. Until then, just watch your football games and figure out who you want to look at. Then, between January and August, you can train your team. You have to get your football roster down to 55 players by August 15, and ready to play a tournament beginning September 1. By the way, my team is made up of all of the NFL superstars, and they've been playing together for 5-10 years. And none of them can give a hoot about money or personal glory - they all want to win. And not only do I have my team at 55 players, but I have another 55 players sitting there who think it's the greatest thing in the world that they get to be beat up by my team, just for practice.

If you win that game, it would rival the 1980 US Hockey team's upset. Until then, I don't see much coming close.

Don't forget Chaminade (DII) over the #1 Virginia Fighting Ralph Sampsons in basketball in...1984 I think it was? Considering how many DI basketball programs there are, I'd rank that one ahead of Appy State, actually.
