Biggest upset of all time?

After much deliberation, I can think of only one example in sports that might be a greater upset than ASU over scUM, the U.S. over the Soviet Union in hockey. Is it possible that this might be one of the top ten upsets ever, in any event or arena? Can anyone else think of more?

I'd throw Buster Douglas over Tyson slightly ahead. At the time, Tyson was a one man wrecking crew and Douglas was some little known boxer from Columbus, Ohio. I'll never forget watching Tyson fumbling around for his mouthpiece.

scUM is a chronic underachiever and ASU was a very good (former) D-1AA National Champion. Biggest upsey in CFB history? Yep. In all of sports? I'd say Tyson/Douglas and USA/USSR hockey are slightly ahead.

Another one that comes to mind is the incredible comeback that Bugs Bunny made against the Gas House Gorillas. To come from 185 runs down only to have their cleanup hitter knock the ball out of the park with a tree trunk? Wow. But, Bugs makes the play of the century by taking a cab to the Empire State building then hoisting his glove up the flag pole to make the final out and win the game. I was amazed. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it.

The Miracle on Ice still needs to be the #1 answer. However, the Michigan game is a big one. A VERY big one.

The USSR over the US in basketball (1972?) would top ASU/scUM IMO. Biggest upset not counting international competition would be a better question IMO. Still need some time to pass, but it certainly is the biggest I can think of in football. In all of American sports, Miracle Mets maybe? Will need some more "seasoned" posters than me to go back in their archives...

Yeah, forgot about that one...

I think it's automatically the biggest upset in CFB. Unless there was another instance in like 1902 where a powerhouse lost to a preschool. Luckily for us, Michigan fans all live in the 1900s, so we can just ask them.

Oh, there is no doubt that it's the biggest in college football. Probably the biggest in football period. To find competetive examples in sports I could only come up with one (forgot about Tyson/Douglas) and I had to move on to things like 13 colonies vs. British Empire, Scotland vs. England, etc.

I saw a show by ESPN that listed the top 20 upsets. They probably limited it to the past century, or something. It was a show they did for a while. Maybe they still show it. Each episode was top 20 whatevers, and I just saw the top 20 upsets. #1 was Miracle on Ice, and #2 was Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson. After that, I can't remember any, except that the Patriots over the Rams was on there, and I was a little annoyed that Ohio State over Miami wasn't on there.

I think that I'd keep those same top 2 where they are. After that, I can't think of another upset bigger than Michigan and App State.

Yet to be determined b/c scUM's rating was a preseason rating and not based on a field of existing work.

My guess is that as the season wears on, we may see it wasn't a victory over a top 5 team but maybe a team ranked in the 20's come seasons end.

Still a big upset in my mind but not one of the biggest of all-time.

I know what you are saying - scUM very well may be overrated, but as ESPN has shown ad nauseum, never before has a 1-A team lost to a 1-AA team.

Given scUM's status in the college FB world, how is this not the biggest upset in college football history? What would your biggest upset be? Not questioning your argument, i am just curious what is a bigger than what we saw this weekend.

Not to take anything away from App State, who is a great team, but for a "perceived" top-5 team to lose at home to a team w/ 25% less scholarships?

The old-time college football game that's considered the biggest upset in the early days of college football was in 1921, when Centre College of Kentucky downed Harvard 6-0. That game was voted the greatest football upset of the half-century by the AP in 1950. Harvard hadn't lost since 1918, and Centre was the smallest college they had ever played.

After the 1919 season, Harvard won the Rose Bowl and was considered to be the National Champion. In 1920, they went undefeated, with a tie against then-powerhouse Princeton, who was considered NC that year.

Although Harvard had been tied by Penn State the week before the Centre game, nobody game the little college from Kentucky a chance when they went to Massachusetts.

Last year, ESPN named it the biggest upset in college football history.

Would it be a safe assumption then that we witnessed this weekend the greatest college FB upset in the modern era?
