In time, who do you think will end up being the bigger Buckeye icon? They both won Heismans. Troy has the edge against scUM and was the QB. Eddie was a great pro as well which helps his legend I think. It's hard for me to even guess, but if I had to pick one, I'd say Eddie for intangible reasons I guess. His chant will always ring famous in the 'Shoe. Maybe that's the clincher, I don't know? Might need some time with new QBs to look back and say...wow, that Troy Smith...

What are your opinions and why?

I disagree that it is moot. When someone says Buckeye to me, I think of a few things. One, the 'Shoe...two, TBDBITL, three...Woody. So on and so forth. When I think of what it is to be a Buckeye player, a 'Shoe legend, I think of Eddie because IMO he embodied everything you want in a college player and absolutely dominated on the field. Troy did much the same, but I still think Eddie will always carry this certain aura. I dunno...just my thoughts. Like I said, maybe it's the chant. Maybe it's his pro success. Can't say.

Regardless, I think it is a good question. Archie IMO is THEE Buckeye icon, followed by Eddie...and who knows, 5 years from now, maybe Troy's next in line. Could be a generation thing, but nonetheless...the question makes sense to me.

Troy, without any doubt!
First Big Ten QB to win the Heisman.
Beat TSUN 3 straight times.
Beat those stinkin Domers in a BCS game, (though many seem to be doing that!)
Provide more amazing highlights than even Ted Ginn Jr.
Gets my vote as the greatest Ohio State QB ever.

Terry Glenn probably did just as much!
Oh! To have had him for just one more year!

Just look at his numbers! :yow1: :yow1: :yow1: :yow1: :yow1:
Terry Glenn (1993-1995)
Wide Receiver
Another Columbus native who overcame several personal problems (including the murder of his mother) to emerge as Ohio State?s only Biletnikoff Award winner. Glenn?s startling foot speed made up for an unimposing frame (5-11, 185) and helped him catch 64 passes for 1,411 yards and 17 TDs in 1995. This was his only season as a full-time starter, but it was the greatest year an OSU receiver ever has recorded. His 82-yard TD reception against Notre Dame in 1995 was a play Buckeye fans will never forget.

Ask that question again in another 10 years or so.

Bingo. Eddie has had his time in the pros, time as a TV commentator, and time to be a Heisman representative...Troy has not. It would be my guess that in the long run Troy could be one of our biggest icons ever.

In time I'll be a better judge, but I think Troy will end up being bigger. The thing that stands out to me is he is an Ohio kid. There's something even more special, to me, when a homegrown guy becomes a buckeye legend. IIRC, isn't Eddie from Philly?

Like has been said, time will be the judge. As far as playing careers go, you can't argue against Troy going 3-0 against scUM and his performance as a whole. He has been so amazing to watch grow and become the player and man he is now. But Eddie has been such an ambassador for the program. I can't imagine Troy not being the same type of man though. I will say that Troy is my favorite Buckeye ever, but check back in ten years.

Asking this right now seems to be a bad idea. Everyone remembers Troy, hell he's not even in the NFL yet, so the people that vote for him are keeping that image of the wolverine slayer fresh in their head.

As someone has already said, wait a few years and see how this works out, no one knows what type of player or member of the alumni Troy will be, I hope he's got the same character and loyalty habbits of Eddie.
