Big Ten Football Attendance - Disappointing

Bobby Hoying

All-American
I took a look at average Big Ten football attendance and I was surprised at how awful it is. Yes, the top 3 are always a good draw even in some of the world's largest stadiums, but there is a huge drop off after that. After you pass Wisconsin and Iowa on the list, you find out more than half of our conference cannot sell out their games :( Check out the first link and see how far these schools are from selling out. That's sad, we're talking about schools like Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota who have huge student populations. Then compare the Big Ten to the SEC which I think sells out a higher percentage of their stadiums. What's going on?

Average
Michigan 110,264 Tennessee 105,789
Penn State 108,917 Georgia 92,746
Ohio State 105,110 LSU 92,212

Iowa 70,585 Florida 90,409
Michigan State 70,540 Auburn 85,063

Indiana 37,004 Kentucky 57,330

Those shoeless, straw hat and denim overall wearing hicks have [censored] else to do.

Compare Big Ten attendance to the Pac-10, ACC, Big 12 and Big East, and I'm sure it's favorable for our conference.

well its hard to expect Indiana to sell a lot of Football tickets, considering their combined record the past 10 seasons is 39-77 and their historic football tradition is less than spectacular

im not sure what your expecting honestly. a couple of them aren't even football schools. outside of ohio people aren't nearly as passionate about football in this region. they follow other sports and as a result gifted athletes from those states are funneled into sports other than football. the schools in those states can't recruit as well as others because there is little in the way of fan support, little money available for facilities and below average coaches pay, not to mention a very small in state player pool to recruit from.

look at pryor. if he had grown up in indiana i guarantee you he would NOT be a football player. look at the struggles UC has had filling their stadium and they are actually in ohio. only way i know of that they can actually "fix it" is to figure out a way to either win with less or start spending money on facilities and coaches. the SEC got to where it is today by throwing stupid amounts of money at their football programs. not because they are just magically better than everyone else.

The top 5 B10 schools total: 476.4 K
The top 5 SEC schools: 473.1K

So with LSU and UF winning 3 of the last 4 NC's they still can't outdraw the Big 3, Wisky and Iowa of the B10. I don't take that as a negative for the B10.

The bottom half of the SEC out drew the bottom half of the B10 by 124K and thats with an extra team. If you are suprised that football is a bigger deal at places like Auburn, Arkansas and South Carolina than it is at Indiana, Northwestern and Minny then I don't know what else to tell you other than I expect Minnys numbers to get a lot better when they open their on campus stadium this year. IU and Northwestern are always going to be a drag on B10 attendance numbers.

No doubt, but I still don't see what it has to do with B10 attendance. The picture you are trying to paint is somewhat....grainy.

Minnesota 51,791

I can speak for Minnesota here (and NU is the same way location-wise); Minneapolis has more professional sports franchises than ALL of the cities hosting SEC schools have combined. The sports dollar is stretched many ways. This year and next year Minnesota's numbers will be better, but unless the product on the field is better it will revert to close to the present figures. Heck, MN's numbers may drop as Wisconsin and Iowa fill up the stands at the Metrodome and inflate the numbers.

At least I have tickets to the first game at the new stadium there.

If you're going to do a comparison, do it properly. Get your stats from the NCAA and compare all the BCS conferences. Also, it might be helpful if you use stats from the same season. Your SEC stats are from 2006 and Big Ten stats are from 2007. Since you're whining about sell outs and percentage of teams selling out, it would probably be better to use percent of capacity instead of average attendance. Luckily, the NCAA tracks this and lists it in an easy to read table: http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/2008/Internet/attendance/FBS_CAPACITY.pdf

The Big Ten does not look that bad to me. Minnesota should improve this year after moving into their new stadium on campus. You cannot really expect much of Indiana and Northwestern, they are who they are. Also, in 2008, the Big Ten had the highest percentage of teams averaging sell outs.
