Big Ten Conference Divisions

Does anyone remember the OU - Nebraska rivalry that was traditionally played on the Friday after Thanksgiving as members of the Big 8?

Greg Pruitt in his tear away jersey shaking and baking.....When the Big 12 happened they separated these two teams into different divisions, effectively putting the kaibash on this great rivalry.....

[DallasHusker] Greg Pruitt was all right ...

But I remember Johnny Rodgers' spectacular punt return, Jeff Kinney, Rich Glover, and David Humm ... [/DallasHusker]

The divisions and the championship game are going to make it much harder to field a national championship contender or get two big ten bcs conference bids. We have really benefited from abstaining from divisions in the bcs era as a team and a conference. I don't think it made any sense to add the ccg until there is some sort of standard that is recognized in the bowl selection. Ultimately we just guaranteed another loss for one of our conferences best teams at the most inopportune time in the season.

I really hope we can turn around and reinvest the money that this game will bring into improving the quality of the conference. Im skeptical personally. I think this was a short sighted tactical move that can only be validated by the similarly short sighted trends of the era. Im just hoping that everyone makes the same mistake so that we can implement some sort of standardized system.

My pride in the Big Ten is no longer unquestionable. I don't think we can really claim some sort of moral (for lack of a better term) superiority to other conferences anymore. I just genuinely hope that the money is worth it in the long term.

Both I and BB73 mentioned it frequently in the Expansion Thread. The fact that you have to be old farts like us to remember it was the most often cited point that we used to argue for putting the teams in the same division. The arrogance shown by some to substitute the lessons of history with their own "logic" has been among the more humorous side-shows throughout the process.

That was unnecessary. That statement was an olive branch in terms of me saying "your opinions are your opinions, but here are mine". Way to reciprocate the respect. :roll2:

Taking the time to state "I could say 'X' but I won't.." is a passive aggressive way of saying 'X' without taking responsibility for doing so.

You are certainly welcome to your opinions. I'm just making it clear that the opinions of message board posters about the decisions I make in my life are meaningless.

However, in regards to "whining on message boards" and signing Facebook petitions, any movement requires a large enough (or cohesive enough) following to make a significant impact.

Which has been my point all along. That is why I specifically stated multiple times prior to the announcement of the decision that the only way to place real pressure on 'the powers that be' is to make it clear that it is financially not in their best interest to make certain decisions (ie split Ohio State & TSUN).

Sure, you can only do what you yourself can do and whatnot, but denigrating the means by which progress is made isn't doing your cause any justice.

I'm doing no such thing. I'm pointing out that progress isn't made by ineffectual whinging.

Quick question,

You were donating to Ohio State, but you took that away based on decisions of the Big Ten football's divisional alignment/scheduling; all the while knowing that you won't be watching the Ohio State football team when you move overseas? [/i]

Actually no.

I was fully planning on watching the games while oversees and coming to Ohio to see at least one home game in person each year.

I haven't gone a season without seeing a minimum of one game in Ohio Stadium since 1990 (and the seasons I saw only a single home game live were 91, 92 & 06).

As much fun as it is for everyone to second guess my motivations and choices (and which I fully expected to happen when I put myself out on that limb as a target for the peanut gallery) that wasn't really the point of the initial post.

The point was that the rapid contact by the finance department suggests that they were planning for the possibility of a backlash by donors. I merely found that rather interesting.

So, if I'm reading this correctly you're telling me that your posts in this thread (on this message board) about what you believe is the only way to "place real pressure on 'the powers that be'" have been in effort to inform others how to make a unified and cohesive impact, however you are also "making it clear that the opinions of message board posters about the decisions [you] make in [your] life are meaningless."

Seems a little bit hypocritical doesn't it?

Why post if you don't want anyone else to reply and discuss? I don't think it works that way.

Conference Championship Games can work the other way, too. If a Big Ten team (say Ohio State) is sitting at #3, they can get one last chance to "impress" with a victory over a great team (say Nebraska) and with that victory, jump one of the top 2 teams, who may not lose, but may not play as well. Florida jumped Michigan in 2006 doing this. Other teams in the past have done the same.

I'd say it always depends on the situation. Sometimes you want one more game, but sometimes you don't. In 1998 we definitely could have used a CCG, probably would have bumped us up over FSU. It gives you another chance to prove it on the field against a great team. If you lose the CCG, then you didn't deserve to go to the NCG anyway, cuz if you are worried about losing a CCG, then you probably will get waxed in a NCG. I don't look at extra games as another chance to lose, I look at them as another chance to show how great we are. I think this move will help the Big Ten. I look forward to OSU playing in the CCG.

It's probably already in here somewhere, but since the search function has never applied to me - Woody / Bo. Done.

First mentioned on page 1 of this thread. :wink2:

They apparently are trying to not piss off other teams by using names or colors that apply only to a couple of teams. So I don't think Woody and Bo divisions, or anything like that, will get selected.

So they'll probably come up with something like the ACC's Atlantic and Coastal, and have 90% of the country not know which teams are in which divisions.
