How do Bowl Mgmt groups determine the rankings of the teams competing? Like the #4 SEC v. #6 Big Ten. I've never understood that outside of conference champions playing in the Rose Bowl.

This would be the Big 10 selection order for 2010/11 as things stand right now, ignoring provisions for the BCS:

Rose, No. 1 pick vs Pac 10 No. 1
Capital One, No. 2 pick vs SEC No. 2
Outback, No. 3 pick vs SEC No. 3/4/5 - SEC rotates this slot with the Cotton and Peach bowls
Gator, No. 4 pick vs SEC No. 6
Insight, No. 5 pick vs Big XII No. 5(?) - I believe this moves up with the Alamo bowl now out
Texas, No. 6 pick vs Big XII No. 6
Little Caesars Pizza, No. 7 pick vs MAC No. 1/2/3 - MAC rotates this slot with the GMAC and International bowls
Unnamed bowl, No. 8 pick vs ??? - There is a new bowl being proposed for play at the Cotton bowl stadium, which is now vacant

Additionally, since the "old" Cotton bowl is moving to the Cowboys' new stadium, there are discussions amongst the Big Ten and SEC to leave the Captial One bowl and take the game to Jerry Jones's house.

Three Big Ten teams will now play on New Years Day versus three SEC opponents, and then you've got the Rose Bowl/BCS games after all those contests.

It's not a ranking. It's a pick order.

Correct! In theory - the Cotton Bowl is SEC #3 (on the rotation). All the means is that they'll take the best SEC west team that isn't playing in the BCS and isn't Auburn and invite them to Texas.

The potential matchup isn't weighed as heavily as the ease of travel for the fan base.

100% agree with this move. The old Citrus bowl is a dump of monumental proportions. Time to get out of dodge.

New Big Ten Bowl Lineup

Sources close to the negotiations have told me the new lineup, which will be in effect from 2010-14.

So, without further ado, here's the selection order.

1. Rose/BCS vs. Pac-10/BCS
2. Capital One vs. SEC
3. Outback vs. SEC
4 or 5. Gator vs. ACC
4 or 5. Insight vs. Big 12
6. Texas vs. Big 12
7. New bowl in Dallas vs. Big 12 or Conference USA
8. Little Caesar's Pizza vs. MAC

Big Ten Announces New Bowl Agreements

Release: 10/13/2009

New bowl lineup for 2010-13 seasons highlighted by six games on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, including five contests on Jan. 1

Park Ridge, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference unveiled its new postseason lineup for the 2010-13 college football seasons, with six Big Ten bowl games set to be featured annually on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, including five contests on Jan. 1. The conference office announced four-year bowl extensions with the Capital One, Outback and Insight and new four-year bowl agreements with the Konica Minolta Gator, Texas and Dallas Football Classic. The Big Ten is already in the midst of an eight-year extension with the Rose Bowl through the 2013 season. This new Big Ten bowl lineup will run concurrently with the latest Bowl Championship Series contract.

The Big Ten's 2010-13 bowl lineup will begin in late December with the Texas Bowl, followed by six more postseason contests played over an estimated 26-hour period on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The Insight Bowl will be played at night on Dec. 31, followed by five more conference bowl games over a roughly nine-hour period on Jan. 1, including the Dallas Football Classic, Capital One Bowl, Outback Bowl, Gator Bowl and Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi.

"We are excited to announce our bowl lineup for the 2010-13 seasons, with seven outstanding destinations in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, which will allow us to showcase our programs in six different New Year's Eve and New Year's Day games," said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany. "Big Ten student-athletes, coaches and fans can now look forward to rewarding trips to Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Tempe, Houston and Dallas, along with the conference's traditional trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. With the number of Big Ten alumni in these states, this bowl lineup is a natural fit and should provide some compelling matchups on the field. We look forward to continuing our bowl relationships with the Rose, Capital One, Outback and Insight, and are pleased to add bowl agreements with the Konica Minolta Gator, Texas and Dallas Football Classic in 2010."

Nice post, but as I read the responses I saw that the myth that you can't play football north of the Mason - Dixon Line in December or January is alive and well. Two reasons get cited: Weather and The Motor City Bowl.

1. Every year the NFL PROVES you can play football up North in the heart of bad weather. Every NFL playoff game played in the North draws well.

2. The Motor City Bowl (aka Pizza Bowl, Palookaville) hasn't drawn well and I've got to believe that it has something to do with the fact that you have sixth or seventh place Big 10 team going against a first or second place MAC team. MAC schools don't draw well to begin with. The Big 10 team is coming in with little more than six wins and thus hardly bound to bring much of a fan base with it. It's "arena ball." It's in Detroit.

Look around the stands during some of the other December and January bowls. Many of them are not drawing much better than the MCB/Pizza/Palooka Bowl. Let's face it, it's the TV money that makes a bowl go.

Put one of the MAJOR bowl games in Chicago. Make it one of the rotating national championship sites. Why let the SEC, Texas and USC remain at home for games that determine the final standings for ALL Div 1A schools? If it's a National Championship then make it more than a simple Tourist Industry Fund Drive.

I just don't believe that you wouldn't have a full house in Soldier Field if a top ranked Ohio State/Michigan/Penn State/Iowa/Wisconsin team were going up against a top ranked SEC/Pac 10/ACC team... and yeah, I do believe that geography plays a part in how teams fare in big bowl games.

Worth mentioning that the SEC has not renewed their end of that Capital One deal yet. What we do know is that the #2 Big 10 team will now pull down $4.7M from the Capital One-Citrus committee, which is by far the best paying bowl slot not affiliated with the BCS. But, the big question is whether Jerry Jones and the new Cotton Bowl committee, which have moved their game to Arlington, would bid more to induce the SEC to send their #2 team to Arlington instead of Orlando.

The new Cotton Bowl is an enticing draw between the new facilities and the prime time TV contract (the Cotton Bowl is moving to 8:00 pm, Jan 7 on FOX). The Capital One bowl, on the other hand, is losing their TV rights exclusivity and will now be on at 1:00 pm, Jan 1 at the same time as the two other Big 10 affiliated bowls. That's the downside of the deal; the Big 10 has three teams playing in these guaranteed New Years Day bowls, but all three of those bowls are on at the same time.
