If we split it into Big 10 East and West... The East would be stacked. And Notre Dame were the choice. With one of the NY/NJ teams we could slide Purdue over.

EAST: Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana

West: Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Minnesota

I would think that with ND in the Big 10, they'd want to be in the same division as Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State to keep those long rivalries together. However, that would be a completely imbalanced proposal- and would end up with the Big 12 North/South imbalance again.

But with that- look at what's happened to the Big 12 North. Nebraska was a powerhouse (and dominated for years), but they've gotten some emerging teams (KSU, others) to be good as well.

I think that the only 12th team option for the Big Ten is ND. Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse and Louisville are all good fodder for discussion, but ND has to be it, and until the Big East kicks out the rest of their sports, the Irish will remain independent.

Penn State = long rivalry? They've only played 18 times all-time and only once (last season) since 1992. Now, they did play 12 straight years from 1981 through 1992, but that stopped the year PSU entered the Big Ten (again, last season being the first game since then).

This is totally fucked. Playoffs, 12th team, divisions, Kiss tradition good by unless we all get together like the wussies at ND and demand a 'NO.'

Bingo-fucking-go. I just loathe how dipshits in positions of power love fuck with shit just to squeeze some extra coinage...

yup, they are going to say fuck tradition to help kick start this network.. if there was a way to add a 12th team but not break up into North & South or whatever.. just add a ND or whoever and play the season like it is now. Hell let penn state and notre dame play every year, last game at 3:30 with The Game kicking off at noon. Im all for another team depending on who, but not for a B10 Championship game..

I've always been of the opinion that Penn State just doesn't belong.

I'd prefer to kick the Nits to the curb and adopt a 9 game conference schedule over any expansion plan. Expansion would hurt every existing team as the proceeds from bowl games would then be split 12 ways as opposed to 11.

We now have a 12 game regular season. Give PSU their walking papers and adopt a 9 game conference schedule.

I don't care about adding another team, as long as there's no playoff game.

Michigan and Ohio State should be the final game of the season.

Period.

Look at the Big 12. It's a freaking mess. Oklahoma or Texas will straight DEMOLISH whoever comes out of the North.

Hell, it JUST happened. Didn't Texas bleed Colorado like a pig in the "playoff" game? What a freaking joke.

On the academic side, it's not about the undergrad, it's about the graduate and research programs. That's why Chicago is still in the "academic Big Ten". It's one of the truly great research universities in the world. In those terms, Notre Dame doesn't fit at all.

This whole business of picking up an extra team for TV revenue is absurd. Is the "Big Ten Network" really all that?

If they're really going to add a team from another state, here are a couple off-the-wall contenders: Virginia or Virginia Tech from the ACC. Both schools aren't all that far from the eastern Big Ten schools, and make more sense than L-ville or WVU. VT in particular has very little history in the ACC, and could leave without disturbing their fan and alumni base. It would definitely be regarded as a move up. VT is also less southern in culture than UVA.

Otherwise, the "we want to add a state unless we get ND" logic precludes Iowa State or Pitt, leaving Mizzou, Nebraska and Kansas to the west. Of those, I only see Mizzou bringing much of a TV market, although Big Red fans are awfully devout. Nebraska isn't leaving the B12, though.

Anyway, as fun as speculating might be, I hate the idea. Put a gun to my head and make me pick a school, and I'd add VT though.

Not sure if the 12th team is in support of their new network...

I think it boils down to the almighty dollar, but I also think that the network coming about was a launching point to bring this back into the limelight. Hell, the network itself was created for the money it could generate, but that isn't the point.

Big Ten Expansion

Big Ten considers expanding to 12

To help the new Big Ten Network TV market, the conference will look at other big-name universities.

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Big Ten officials will likely discuss expanding to 12 schools to accommodate the new Big Ten Network, Commissioner Jim Delany said.
The network, which is scheduled to launch Aug. 30, would benefit from an additional big-name university in a large television market, Delany said.

The Big Ten tried to lure Notre Dame into the conference in 1999, but the Fighting Irish chose to remain a football independent after lengthy discussions.
