Do people in Chicago watch the BTN for Northwestern? Or because they are intrigued by matchups involving UM/UW/OSU/IU/ILL? I have a sneaking suspicion it is the latter, just like it would be for NYC & great matchups with Texas/ND vs OSU/UM/PSU.

Rutgers 'potential' was never realized in a terrible big east league without a full set of teams. That's not going to change when their toughest games switch from USF/WVU/Pitt to OSU/UM/PSU.
joepa has pushed for rutgers since day 1. day 1.

Nebraska just doesn't excite me at all. Throw in their lack of institutional control, reliance on partial qualifiers, small and unexciting (road trips to Omaha!!!) market and mediocre academic profile, and they are just a lousy pick.

I have never been on a road trip to se the Buckeyes play. What is the draw to going to Iowa City, East Lansing, Urbana-Champaign, Bloomington or West Lafayette, other than you get to see the Buckeyes? Is it campus life? Atmosphere? Night life? If anyone has been to a road trip to any of these places let me know.

I realize that a road trip to Austin would be a step up from every Big Ten foe except maybe Northwestern(Chicago).

id entertain an arg for evanston, minn/st paul, madison, ann arbor all places people might go if it werent for a b10 football game. west laf, iowa city, c-u, bloomington wouldnt be on anyones map...

pitt, syracuse, lincoln all fall closer to the first group than the second...

I'm actually surprised by this. Iowa City is one of the few Big Ten college towns I haven't been to, but I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the campus and atmosphere from those that have gone, as well as those few people I know that went to school there. Now, I have been to West Laff and East Lansing, and I can definitively say I wouldn't go out of my way to get to either town again unless the Buckeyes were playing. Would those that have been to Iowa City agree it is not memorable? I've always thought about trying to make a game there sometime.

What special treatment are you talking about Piney? Revenue? BCS berths? NBC contracts?

I believe the big perk they would want would be revenue. You would have to ask Notre Dame fans what they would want though as I am not in favor of it. Really the only perk I would give them would be if they would switch over as soon as they could (and not wait for the NBC contract to end) is to allow them to continue have their home games broadcast on NBC.

I believe Rutgers can become a solid program in the Big Ten (football-wise at least). First key would be the extra revenue to keep Schiano there. With the extra revenue you can add to facilities and coaching staff along with recruiting budgets as he has shown he can recruit. Imagine what he can do by selling the Big 10.

Would they become a power? Doubtful, but they can be a sneaky team that might be able to take advantage of PSU's off-years.

The same can be said about Syracuse, with the extra revenue they can rebuild their facilities and restore their tradition if they find the right coach.

my point was the first group, people might actually go to (without sports involved) the second group, not likely. i mean the hamburg inn is cool for its place in politics, and dont get me wrong, your act scores go through iowa city too... i just dont know anyone who travels there, ie vacations there. i know people who go to places like chicago, ann arbor, madison, twin cities, etc, for one reason or another. ill stick with my statement, that the second group doesnt get visits like the first do for non football reasons... as good as some of the things in those places might be, as nice of college towns as they might be, its more like comparing athens to columbus. some people loves athens, some dont, at the end of the day, its a college town.

Gotcha. I can definitely see your point, although I've never thought of Ann Arbor as a destination spot aside from being a college town in the same way I've considered Chicago, the twin cities and probably even Madison to be places to visit in their own right.

I believe the big perk they would want would be revenue.
They get a huge perk & boost by tapping into the BTN/ESPN revenue, especially with the uptick that Notre Dame will bring.
Really the only perk I would give them would be if they would switch over as soon as they could (and not wait for the NBC contract to end) is to allow them to continue have their home games broadcast on NBC.
1) Current contract thru 2015. Expansion won't start this fall season, so they have 4 years left.
2) Expansion will likely take effect a few years after it is announced, reducing that total further.
3) The ND road games, coaches shows and other sports are still a nice perk until NBC runs out.
4) NBC needs money, maybe they'd rather get a buyout for those years anyway.

With the extra revenue you can add to facilities and coaching staff along with recruiting budgets as he has shown he can recruit. Imagine what he can do by selling the Big 10.
Why isn't he doing it now though? Since their glorious 06 season, he has finished the regular season 7-5, 7-5 & 8-4.

Could it happen? Sure, but I'm not sure it's probable. The b10 already has Rutgers like teams in Ill, Purd, MSU & some of the additions (A&M, Miz, Neb if they don't sustain success).

To go 8-4:

Rutgers beat: Howard 2-9*, FIU 3-9, Maryland 2-10, Texas-S 6-5*, Army 5-7, Conn 8-5, USF 8-5, Lville 4-8
Rutgers lost to: 12-1 Cinci, 10-3 Pitt, 4-8 Cuse, 9-4 WVU

To go 8-4 in expanded b10, 9 conf 3 ooc:

7 games against: 10-2 OSU, 10-3 PSU, 6-6 MSU, 5-7 UM, 4-8 IU, 5-7 PUR, 6-6 ND
2 games against: ________ , _________

* - 2 of these: 9-3 WIS, 6-6 MIN, 10-2 IOW, 8-4 NW, 10-4 NEB, 8-5 MIS, 3-9 ILL

I'm not sure they can consistently beat MSU, UM, PUR, NW (w/ Fitz), or a number of the West division. UM is not going to be this weak by the time expansion happens. Harbaugh or someone will have them respectable.

It becomes even more unlikely if you expand to 16 with the opposite division featuring Texas & TexA&M, and a team like Illinois ends up in the east.

Perhaps Rutgers could go 8-4, but this projection would only be good enough for 7th in the conf (5-4 record), right ahead of Minny.

2009 record: 8-4 overall (5-4)

L - OSU 10-2
L - IOW 10-2
L - PSU. 9-3
L - N-D. 6-6
W- MSU 6-6
W- U_M 4-5
W- N_W 8-4
W- PUR. 5-7
W- I_U.. 3-9
W- OOC
W- OOC
W- OOC I-AA
with an expanded conference you likely wouldnt have to play all the big boys, heck likely youd play half of them... of the four power teams (osu, um, psu, wisc?) youd play two in theory. it seems to me that larger conferences seem to promote the perception of more league depth with lots of 3 loss teams...

I think my numbers were off, so let me re-do that post. However, Rutgers would be in the east with OSU, UM, PSU... and maybe ND, and would play all of them annually. In a 16 team conference they would play 9 b10 games (7 conf), compared with 8 b10 (6 conf) in a 14 team conf.

To get to 16, I moved IU-PUR to the west to preserve that rivalry and brought NW over.

Possible expansion:

east: OSU, UM, MSU, PSU, NW, ND, RUT, SYR
west: WIS, MIN, IOW, IU, PUR, ILL, MIZ, NEB

L - OSU 10-2
L - IOW 10-2 *
L - PSU. 9-3
L - N-D. 6-6
L - SYR, 4-8
W- MSU 6-6
W- U_M 5-7
W- N_W 8-4
W- PUR 5-7 *
W- OOC
W- OOC
W- OOC I-AA

8-4 (5-4) - good for 7th place

This schedule is among the easier possibilities:
1) UM isn't going to stay terrible
2) Pitt instead of Cuse
3) Texas and A&M being added to the west instead of Cuse & ND

My ideal conf:
east: OSU, UM, MSU, PSU, IU, PUR, ND, _X_
west: WIS, MIN, IOW, NW, ILL, NEB/MIZ, TEX, A&M
X - should be Cuse, but we'll leave it as Rutgers for this discussion.

The east is about the same, but the west 2 games become brutal.

1) TEX, NEB/MIZ, A&M, WIS, IOW, NW are tough games
2) ILL & MINN are on similar footing to rutgers

Something else I'd add: adding Texas, TexA&M & Neb/Miz make the CCG seem like a different season. If we're just playing Wisky, Iowa or Neb/Miz after Michigan, that is very underwhelming and might not be worth spoiling The Game. Facing a squad like Texas (or a great enough Wisky/west team to outdo them) makes it feel like a true postseason game.

This conference alignment would preserve almost all rivalries:

OSU-UM | OSU-PSU
PUR-IU | PUR-ND
ND-UM | ND-MSU
MSU-UM | MSU-PSU
PSU-Pitt? |

ILL-MISS | ILL-NW
WIS-MIN | WIS-IOW
IOW-MIN | UT-A&M

Acceptable casualties:

OSU-ILL | OSU-UW (unofficial)
UM-UM | ILL-PUR

It would foster the natural rivalry OSU & ND fans have as well.
east: OSU, UM, MSU, PSU, IU, PUR, ND, _X_
west: WIS, MIN, IOW, NW, ILL, NEB/MIZ, TEX, A&M
Here's how our 2010 schedule would look (team in parentheses is current 2010 opponent):
Marshall
Miami FL
Ohio
E Mich
@ Notre Dame (ILL)
Indiana
@ Tex A&M ** (Wis)
Purdue
@ Syracuse ** (Min)
Penn St
@ Iowa * (Iowa)
Michigan
CCG - Texas, Wisc or Iowa
* - Random selection from west, I used 3rd & 7th. 6-7 of 8 are good opponents. NW/WIS, ILL/MIN, NEB/TEX are the other 3 potential pairings).
** - Big east addition, could be Pittsburgh or Rutgers.

I think that's a nice upgrade independent of the major benefits for revenue and prestige.

2011 schedule in new b10 said:
Akron
Toledo
@ Miami
Michigan St
@ Penn St
Notre Dame
@ Indiana
Missouri *
