(14) MICHIGAN ST 88, GEORGIA TECH 86
EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Paul Davis and Michigan State used their vast experience to claim another big win for the Big Ten.
Davis scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half as the 14th-ranked Spartans claimed an 88-86 victory over Georgia Tech in a ACC/Big Ten Challenge contest.
With the win, the Big Ten captured its fourth victory in seven games of this annual event. Later Wednesday, No. 16 Indiana will host top-ranked Duke in the Blue Devils' first trip to Assembly Hall.
Holding a 42-32 lead at the break, Michigan State (4-2) weathered an early second-half run by the Yellow Jackets behind Davis, one of four returning starters from last year's Final Four club.
After a jumper by Jervis Smith cut the deficit to 53-49 with 14:41 left, Davis scored 15 of his team's next 19 points over the next seven minutes to push the advantage to 72-63.
Davis, who finished 10-of-12 from the floor with seven rebounds, began the spurt with consecutive follow shots, and later capped it with his second 3-pointer of the game.
Despite its youth, Georgia Tech rallied once again, closing within 86-83 on a 3-pointer by Anthony Morrow with 25 seconds left. After Shannon Brown sank two free throws for the Spartans, Ra'Sean Dickey closed the lead to two points on a shot from the arc.
Hampered by a bandage over his left eye after getting hit by an elbow by Smith, Davis had a chance to seal the win, but missed two free throws with five seconds remaining.
Theodis Tarver rebounded the second miss, and sophomore guard Zam Fredrick raced up the court before his potential game-winning 3-pointer bounced off the back rim.
Brown also scored 22 points and Drew Neitzel 17 with seven assists for the Spartans, who beat the Yellow Jackets in their first meeting since a controversial finish in the 1990 NCAA Tournament.
In that meeting, Georgia Tech guard Kenny Anderson sent the game into OT with a jumper that replays showed came after the buzzer and the Yellow Jackets prevailed in the extra session, 81-80, to advance to the "Elite Eight."
Dickey scored 24 points and Morrow chipped in 23 with seven 3-pointers for Georgia Tech (2-2), which absorbed its second straight loss despite shooting 65 percent (22-of-34) after intermission.
