DEFENSE:
Bobby Carpenter, Ohio State, SR, LB, Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster
Carpenter equaled an Ohio State record with four sacks and recorded a season-best 11 tackles to help OSU hold the high-powered Michigan State attack three touchdowns below its season average in a 35-24 victory. The Spartans entered the game leading the conference with 45.4 points per outing. The senior linebacker collected seven solo defensive stops on the day and his four sacks led to 27 yards of loss for the MSU offense. He matched the school record of four quarterback drops in one game previously set by Jason Simmons against Washington State in 1991, which is tied for the third-highest sack total in Big Ten history. Carpenter currently leads the Big Ten and is tied for second in the country with eight sacks on the season. He picks up his first career weekly award. <!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->

CO-SPECIAL TEAMS:
Steve Breaston, Michigan, SR, KR/PR, North Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills
Breaston totaled 156 return yards and broke loose for a 41-yard kickoff return with 58 seconds left to set up Michigan's last-second game-winning drive over Penn State. The senior wideout posted two more big returns in the final quarter. After the visitors took an 18-10 lead, his 39-yard kickoff return to the Michigan 45-yard line set the Wolverines up for the game-tying drive and his 23-yard punt return later in the quarter to the UM 42-yard line set up the drive that led to a go-ahead field goal. For the game, Breaston returned four kickoffs for 128 yards (32.0 avg.) and two punts for 28 yards (14.0 avg.). This marks his second career weekly laurel, as he was previously honored for his special teams performance on Nov. 13, 2004.
Ashton Youboty, Ohio State, JR, CB, Klein, Texas/Klein
Youboty returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown and later knocked down another field goal attempt to boost Ohio State to a victory over Michigan State. The junior cornerback, who also had six tackles and a sack in the game, picked up a blocked field goal at the end of the first half and sprinted 72 yards for a touchdown to cut the MSU lead to 17-14. Trailing 24-21 in the fourth quarter, Youboty was again involved in stopping a field goal attempt by blocking the kick on his own to set up an OSU scoring drive as the Buckeyes claimed a 28-24 lead they would not relinquish. He earns his first career player of the week award.

That's what I thought, too. I figured maybe it was Mike Kudla being held hostage in Happy Valley. I mean, they did hold him all night on the 8th. :tongue2:

Same thing with A.J. I thought he was going to need a new jersey at half time of that game. He was literally jumping up and down at the refs complaining about getting held on every other play.

Bobby is literally unstoppable as a speed-rush DE...

They should be able to give the award to 11 players. Our whole defense played amazing as a group Saturday. Our D-line really stepped up to free up our linebackers to just make a ton of tackles and roam the feild. Wow!

on the topic of holding, did anyone else notice Carps showing the umpire his ripped undershirt sleeve when he was asking for the holding call .... the calls started coming (for both sides) shortly thereafter.

He might be our highest draft pick this April because he has that ability to put his hand down and rush from the end spot.

I don't know if you seen during the game against MSU when Bobby's undershirt that was coming out from his jersey was actually ripped and he was showing it to the officials showing them how they were holding.

I didn't get to see the whole game so I must have missed that. I just remember A.J. jumping up and down during the PSU game. I only saw the first half this past weekend and I remember seeing Patterson and Pitcock also getting held a couple of times. At least Bobby was able to get the ref's attention because from what I heard the flags were flying a little more during the second half.

Why do you all think holding isn't called so much? Is the game evolving (like the strike-zone in baseball evolved), and the referees think "ehh.. that's just a little bit of holding. I won't call that." Or maybe they just don't see it all the time. (They have a TON to watch for - there's no way they could see it all.) Or is it a conscious effort across college football to increase the effectiveness of offenses?

I don't know what I think. I don't think I believe that someone said, "I don't want you refs to call holding so much anymore. I want college football to be huge for offenses." I also think that the officials can see a majority of the field - they aren't just missing all these calls.

And to get this thread back on track, congratulations to Carpenter and Youboty. Awesome game by the entire defense.
