I used to look forward to running a 21.1km half marathon from my office on the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town to my home in Hout Bay. Whales, dolphins, wind sailors from Table Mountain and kite surfers in the water, Camps Bay, running down or up the famous Suikerbossie hill...it was magic. I can't count the number of idiots that got themselves hit by taxis by either running with traffic or against traffic on spots that left no room between the pavement and the wall of Table Mountain stone from which it was cut. I had one MBA student who had ridden Cape Town to Cairo on a motorcycle and then into Israel, Eastern Europe and Moscow. He was a big-time kite surfer...until the wind caught him and he was taken into town and smashed into a high rise (and died).

In my life, I have run more than 35,000kms and cycled nearly 20,000kms more. I've scuba dived, shark dived, surfed in "adventure" spots. I've been in places where the police and rioters suddenly overwhelmed my position without forewarning in the Apartheid years. I've also been my own share of stupid along the way.

Still, in my mind, among those who put themselves in the worst places are those running or cycling in unsafe places as the sun is rising or setting or when it is dark.

Do stupid and expect to get stupid prizes.

I edited my post to say that he died. Stories varied but I heard he connected somewhere around the 8th or 10th floor and more than a kilometer inland. That must have been one heck of a way to go.

Well, I can't delete it now!

And yeah, you wonder just how far he might have been able to go if it weren't for that poorly placed building. Blame the city planners if you ask me.

Wow! I never knew this thread existed until today. I fucking hate those damn bicylists!
First,

Second, .... maybe there isn't a "second".

Seriously, I don't mind cyclists, as long as they follow the rest of the rules of the road. Near me, there's signs that say that drivers need to change lanes for cyclists - bicycles get a full lane. That's fine. Good for you - you're moving your body and getting a better work-out than I am. But, then don't pass me and all the other cars waiting at the traffic light. Don't go through the red light. If you go through the red light, now I need to pass you again, which means moving back over to the left lane, making someone let me over, passing you again, only to get stopped by the next light, where you think you can pass me, again.

Don’t you hate cars that don’t “follow the rules” a heck of a lot more? Half of the idiots behind the wheel are on their cell phones. The other half are driving 50mph in the left hand lane. The other half roll every residential stop sign or drive 45 in a school zone. That‘s some serious Yogi math right there.

Yeah, but now we're in the "Pet Peeves" thread.

I've said this before I'm pretty sure, but this is 100% right. A big part of the problem is that cars (and remember, stereotypes exist for good reasons) assume that cyclists are not going to follow the rules and then do lost of now stupid shit because of it. The running traffic lights and stop sign things are the most obvious and a real problem. (I mean I run stop signs in residential neighborhoods if no one is around and cars do too, I actually yelled at an uber eats dude a few weeks ago for blowing through a stop sign on my street - then 3 more - at 40 mph. Shortcut you see, too many lights on High Street) But now you have everyone stopping at 4 way stops to see what the stupid bike guy is going to do. Well, I'm taking my turn, and sorry if I'm going left and its gonna be slow and you're just going to have to wait. The passing on the right needs to stop for the cyclist too, and there's a bunch of self preservation things cyclists do that the drivers don't anticipate that are now a result of people doing unpredictable things.

Bike lanes for the bikes are nice, now just use it like you're a regular vehicle, not an asshole, stupid bike riders. (me)

(oh, quick note, in some states, like Ohio, cyclists are allowed to proceed on red if there's no cross traffic, so, if you just showed up at the light opposite me, please kindly shut the fuck up, I can't make the light change, I'm not a car)
