I'll give you Meyer, Spurrier, Miles and Satan. After that there is nothing real impressive. I don't know a single UT fan that would offer up fat Phil as a point of pride.

So what is the theory here? Do these coaches make the conference or does the conference make the coaches? You can't have it both ways. I think the SEC is an incredible conference, don't get me wrong. I, however, think it has more to do with geography than anything else. I think you can plug in a lot of mediocre coaches in to positions in the SEC and they will get talent every year and attention that will put them on pedestals--sometimes undeserving.

Theory here is that only the Big 10 and the SEC have that array of accomplishment on the sidelines, and I personally think that it is impressive. I think Fulmer is the Carr of the SEC, with a good 1998 team, and overall good recruiting, but underachieving considering the talent.

You look at the rest of the country, and no other conference outside of our two has that bucket of talent on the sidelines - IMO

Mili - I was not trying to dis Tress, but a BCS or Division I AP title is not equal to any of the Penguins very impressive Championships. Tressel's string of championships is one of the most impressive accomplishments in coaching, and he is as of this date the best coach in America.

But all due respect, apples and oranges.

Impressive Resumes? To be sure.

I have to say, though, doesn't strike me as the most stable bunch (generally)....

Just shooting from the hip here Gator so if I make a fool of myself (and can't get to the edit fast enough) please be gentle:biggrin: I agree that the SEC and a slightly lesser extent the B10 has a bunch of headset talent. I also think that is has a lot to do with tradition in the sense that good coaches want to coach programs that can excel. In the SEC you have Bama, Tennessee, Georgia and LSU with a rich history then recently with Spurriers UF emergence you have many destinations where it is clear that you can win it all (I'll add in Auburn who has a good history and has been very good the last 20 or so years)

The B10 has top programs too that pull in top coaching talent (although it will be interesting to see what happens in Happy Valley if Joepa ever does step down)

In the B12 you have Texas, OU and Nebraska who have a rich history but I'm not sure outside of Stoops that they have capitalized on this to bring in top coaches (not sold on a VYless Mack Brown)
Same with the P10, not as many teams with great history and only one coached by a top level headsetter (PC duh)

After all that, I'm not sure wtf I said:2004:

I guess that I agree with you that the SEC has some great coaches, but what came first, the chicken or the egg

B12 has Stoops and Mack Brown, jury is still out on Pellini as a HC. I think Leach is a true offensive genius at Tech. Thats a solid 4.

Pac 10 has Peety, Dennis Erickson, Bellotti(sp) a Stoops and Ty. UCLA is TBD but thats a pretty solid lineup using the same standards.

ACC you have to give B Bowden his due if you are going to do the same for Paterno. Butch Davis has proven his worth, Beamer is a national name.

BE has Schiano, R Rod and the USF coach(name escapes me right now).

As with the teams I think the SEC and Big 10 are better in their mid to bottom tier coaches but all the BCS conferences can compete at the top.
