I'll second the nomination for Glory. If you take in the movie in one sitting, the music will send chills down your spine by the end. It's one of the best stories in American history if you ask me.

I also like Braveheart. "Every man dies, but not every man lives."

One of my all-time favorite movies of any kind is Sand Pebbles. Steve McQueen and Richard Crenna.

Also:
Midway
The Red Badge of Courage (w/ Audie Murphy)
Saving Private Ryan (followed closely by "Shaving Ryan's privates")
Gettysburg
Full Metal Jacket
The Dirty Dozen
Another all-time favorite is Spartacus - but don't know if you would consider this a "war movie" or not.
Patton
We Were Soldiers
Bridge Over the River Kwai
Dr Strangelove

Clint Eastwood is making a movie version of Flags of Our Fathers, about the 6 flag raisers on Iwo Jima. I am reading the book right now, and it is something else-right up there w/ Stephen Ambrose's best stuff, it is written by James Bradley, the son of one of the flag raisers. I am sure the movie will be phenomenal. Also, Eastwood is simultaneously making a movie called Lamps Against the Wind, about the Japanese on Iwo Jima.

Stx,

I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. I was lucky enough to do a battle study at Iwo when I was a young Marine Corporal. There are still rifle barrels sticking out of the ground and unexploded ordinance in the Japanese Bunkers.....I actually walked through some of the tunnels and wound up in some sort of temple. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

My fav movies:

Patton
Platoon
Braverheart
Saving Private Ryan
Blackhawk Down

Has anyone see Jarhead yet? Is it worthy for this list?<!-- / message --><!-- edit note -->

Patton (a five-star film that's in my top ten favorites in any genre)
Gettysburg (a little long but that bayonet charge is classic)
We Were Soldiers
The Green Berets
The Alamo
Fort Apache
They Died With Their Boots On
Glory

I personally think Saving Private Ryan tends to drag quite a bit in the middle. But the D-Day landing scene at the beginning represents some of the best filmmaking I've ever seen. Also, I saw the first two episodes of Band of Brothers and I thought they were great. I read the book and they did a pretty good job of representing it on the screen.
