Bernie Machen (Florida President) wants a playoff system

buckeyefool

He's back and better than ever!
  • The article starts out decent, and Machen makes some good points, of course by the end he is using it to bash every other conference that isn't the SEC. Gotta love the shot at OSU and the Big Ten in there. If He has such a problem with Oden's classes, I am sure he will have no problem revealing all the classes that Flordias players take.

here is part where he just goes off on the big tem, but it you look earlier in the article he says that the Big Ten and The Pac 10 are to blame for allot of the problem with football since they have a "deal" with the rose bowl.

SPLN: That raises another question. What did you think of Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany's open letter comparing the Big Ten to the SEC?

Dr. M: It's ridiculous. What a homer. I was at Michigan (as provost and dean of the school of dentistry). I know how they get in at Michigan. Don't talk to me about the Nobel laureates at Michigan.

Just look at Greg Oden's class schedule this semester. The Big Ten has fought the conference playoff, then they (complain) because Ohio State doesn't have a game in 48 days. (Actually 51 between the last game of the season and the BCS title game. The Big Ten traditionally ends its regular-season football schedule before Thanksgiving).

Whose fault is that? What's happened is the world has moved, the Big Ten is no longer calling the shots

What an illogical SOB, saying that extended seasons are not making it harder on the athletes and then noting that baseball is a year round sport.... of course it is. Name a college sport that isn't a year round sport anymore... for that matter you have to get down to tiny high schools to find a 3-sport letterman/woman anymore. ALL athletes are expected to train through the off season.

And the 12th game forces Florida to play Western Carolina... that may be true for the first two, perhaps three seasons, but they could schedule a game, home and away, with say, Texas, or Boston College in November...

Note who he's talked to... the sugar bowl, the orange bowl, ... does this smell like home cooking to you?

It's easy to throw darts at the Big 10/Pac 10 when your teams and your conference are raising tourist dollars for the South. Now let's pump some money into the Rust Belt economy. Let's have the BCS finals move from The Veterans Bowl in Soldier Field to the National Bowl in DC, to the Sugar Bowl, to the Rose Bowl... North, South, East and West.

I don't for one second doubt the quality of football played in the SEC or the PAC 10, but their biggest games, the bowl games, are set up in their region and I strongly believe that the overall record of Big 10 teams in bowl games would be stronger if some of those games had been played in their back yard and not on the road in places where an SEC/Pac 10 team has played previously.

If it helps at all, I happen to know that a number of U.F. football players (the only name that comes to mind is Tebow, but I know a bunch of others do, too) are taking classes for the mentally handicapped. As far as I know, none of the football players are actually mentally handicapped, but there you go.
