Uhm, aren't there a bunch of hippies living in Trees right by the University trying to keep them from building on it?

You're both right - there are lots of multi-million homes around Berkeley, but there are in Oakland's city limits now too - the median home price in CA is over half a million now. Berkeley, just like San Fran, still has alot of wayward hippies floating around, old (authentic, and probably now successful) and young (posers).

The tree people are real, but, perhaps, a little misguided... they've built real homes in the trees to keep them from getting chopped down - but they're landscaped trees that the University planted or has at least maintained... its not like they're fighting against segregation or Vietnam or apartheid or or rain forest clearing or anything.

Yeah, my ex-girlfriend went to school up there, SFSU, and I was shocked at the cost of housing, especially in S.F. City, there's tons of houses where people have basically broken them off into multi-room hotels, renting each room out for 700+ Dollars a month.

As for the Hippies, I think the "true hippie" is a rarity now anyways, its' an idea that had it's time, and that time is passed. Now it's become the idea of a person with dreadlocks, that wears hemp clothing, doesn't bathe very often and covers their body odor with patchouli.
