Yes Virginia, the Bengals do have tight ends.

In fact, they not only have tight ends that can block like old standby Reggie Kelly, but they have tight ends that catch well enough to split out like Ben Utecht and rookie Matt Sherry.
Not only that, but the Bengals have a tight end like Dan Coats athletic enough to get a look at fullback in what could be an intriguing roster scrum with incumbent Jeremi Johnson.

I'm not surprised he showed up...I'm not surprised he walk out to the practice field 10 minutes late...I'm not surprised that he didn't participate in any of the drills either...

News - Chad takes field, watches - Cincinnati Bengals

About the only thing that would ever surprise me about Chad Johnson any more is if he simply keeps his mouth shut and plays football.

I used to think Johnson's on-field antics were entertaining and done in 'good fun', but after this off season and all the whining, pissing & moaning, and baseless ultimatums from him, any attention CJ brings upon himself beyond ESPN reporting, "Chad Johnson's making catches & saying nothing!!!" will just add to his increasingly growing negative reputation.

Palmer & Marvin used to deflect much of the negative attention/perception from Chad...those days are now gone, and I think Johnson has used up all his "free passes" from the media, fans, and obviously the Bengals organization.

Just play ball, Chad...or go into acting  ... I really don't care at this point. The Bengals have sucked with you, we're (fans) certainly not afraid to suck without you. :(

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said the reason disgruntled wide receiver Chad Johnson didn't practice Thursday is because of an undisclosed ailment. Johnson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed Thursday that it is an injured ankle that is prohibiting his client from practicing. At the Pro Bowl back in February, Johnson said he had planned to get a minor procedure on his ankle during the offseason involving arthroscopic surgery. Rosenhaus confirmed it's the same issue, but doesn't know how severe it is. News - Bengals cite Chad 'ailment' - Cincinnati Bengals

A couple of the funnier quotes (to me at least) from his teammates (from the link provided by BF):

Carson Palmer:
"I think everybody in here is probably sick of hearing about him. Everybody out there sick about hearing about him. I'm not going to talk about him, I'll talk about other guys."
:pissed:
I get the impression that Carson is sick of Chad Johnson...just my intuative take. :wink2:

TJ Houshmandzadeh:
"He told me last night that he wasn't coming..........but I knew he was lying."

:slappy:

Does Chad Johnson have anyone that would call him a true friend? confidant? Even if you know him well enough to say, "Oh, that's just Chad being Chad." How does lying to your 'friends' inspire confidence or trust in any aspect of your life? The dude needs help...personally, professionally, and otherwise, but somehow I don't think Drew Rosenhaus is the life coach to do it.

Chad Johnson says an ankle injury prevented him from practicing.

CINCINNATI -- Chad Johnson jogged onto the Bengals practice field at 9:57 a.m. yesterday, 12 minutes late, with his helmet in his hand and his shoes untied. It was the most strenuous thing he did during the morning practice. He spent most of the 90 minutes watching other players perform drills.
With that, his ongoing standoff with the Bengals morphed from loud and explicit to passive-aggressive.
The Pro Bowl receiver reported to minicamp and avoided a fine, but he barely participated in either of the two practices. Coach Marvin Lewis fought a smirk when he reported that Johnson complained of "some sort of ailment." Johnson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said it was a lingering ankle injury and the Bengals have recommended surgery. Lewis said Johnson played through the injury last season, repeatedly declined to have the surgery and was cleared by team doctors to practice this weekend.

Utecht can't pass up chance for catches
Tight end joined Bengals to be integral part of passing game

By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Ben Utecht was recruited to the University of Minnesota as a receiver, added a few pounds of muscle and was moved to tight end. Under coach Glen Mason, that meant a lot of blocking and only a few pass routes per game.
Utecht signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent, hoping to back up Dallas Clark, one of the elite pass-catching tight ends in the league. Instead, he became a starter opposite Clark, which meant a lot of blocking while Clark ran routes.
"Playing for the Colts was the best thing I could have done. I learned a lot. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't want more," Utecht said. "I know I can be a go-to guy like Dallas Clark."
The Bengals agree. They signed him to a three-year, $9 million contract in the offseason to be the pass-catching tight end they have lacked in recent years.
