Ben Simmons (Brooklyn Nets)

Ben Simmons changed his digits so Sixers teammates couldn’t message him before Nets trade

Philadelphia 76ers veteran Danny Green is spilling tea about Ben Simmons ahead of the matchup against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday. While Simmons won’t be playing in the showdown, he will be on the bench, subjecting himself to a Philly crowd that’s sure to let him hear it, and then some.

One claim Green passed along during an appearance on The Ryen Russillo Podcast was Simmons changing his phone number without anybody telling him on the team. The Sixers veteran said he texted Simmons “a bunch” but never heard back:

Ben Simmons changed his phone number without telling anyone on the team. Danny Green personally reached out and sent “a bunch” of texts over a few weeks, but Ben didn’t respond.

Nobody heard from him until he showed up at practice.

If it wasn’t anymore clear at this point, it’s obvious that Simmons was done with Philly and the Sixers are thrilled to have moved on from this mess. There’s certainly blame to go around for how things got so bad, but you have to imagine Sixers players harbor at least some resentment here, though in the end it wound up getting them a motivated James Harden. Joel Embiid made his feelings very clear about the trade with an epic meme right after it happened, and Green isn’t the only role player speaking out about the whole situation. Georges Niang also chimed in with some notable frustration this week.

One could argue Green is going over the line by going after Simmons like this, but the frustration is at least understandable. It’s going to be a rowdy atmosphere at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night, and both teams should have a little extra motivation for this one. It’s a bummer that Simmons won’t actually be playing (Green isn’t playing either), but just the fact that he’ll be in the building is notable after how everything played out.

Sources: Brooklyn Nets' Ben Simmons files grievance to challenge nearly $20 million withheld by Philadelphia 76ers

Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons has filed a grievance to challenge the nearly $20 million of salary withheld to him by the Philadelphia 76ers this season, setting up a potentially significant showdown, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

The grievance -- which will now go to an arbitration process -- could have larger league implications amid future issues of mental health matters and NBA contracts.

Philadelphia has repeatedly insisted that Simmons was in breach of his contract under the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and National Basketball Players Association and had the right to recoup the money advanced to him before the season. The NBA and NBPA have been at odds on this issue and now arbitration could set a precedent on how future matters of mental health and contracts might be handled.

You had to know that would be coming.
