Oh GEEZE, did LSU spy on him at the Fiesta Bowl the past two years. Seriously, if LSU wanted to spy, it is LOUISIANA. OSU would need to practice out of the state.

Well, he didn't come out and say we did, but he sure as hell hinted around to it. He made several comments about "people just walking around in the dome" and "How do we know who was in the suites up there?" "Are the press boxes locked?" And he said if had it to do over, that he'd practice elsewhere, even if it were a high school field.

I wonder: If they had practiced at John Curtis instead, would that have prevented Jason White from shittin' his drawers in the face of our blitzes?

Outside the Ernst Cafe, declared "Varsity Club South" in New Orleans, Larry Lokal, aka Buckeyeman, checks out buckeye necklaces with Susan Morrow Finley, president of the Ohio State Alumni Club of Greater New Orleans. The necklace sale was a club fundraiser.

NEW ORLEANS -- Like a quarterback running a two-minute drill without timeouts, Ernst Cafe owner Cindy Besselman was in scramble mode yesterday.
She had assumed there would be more time before the arrival of Ohio State University football fans. Besselman figured she had another day to decorate her 106-year-old establishment that has earned the designation of "Varsity Club South" for the weekend.
"Cindy, you don't understand," said Susan Morrow Finley, the local OSU alumni chapter president. "Your place is now the center of the Buckeye universe."

LSU's Flynn ready to play
Quarterback eager to return after missing SEC title game
Saturday, January 5, 2008 3:07 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW ORLEANS -- Matt Flynn has had enough of this standing and watching thing.
The quarterback spent his first four years at LSU watching others play the position, including last year's top NFL draft pick, JaMarcus Russell. This year, finally, it was Flynn's team, at least until the Southeastern Conference championship game.
But again -- because of a sprain of his right, throwing shoulder -- he was on the sideline, standing and watching, as backup Ryan Perrilloux directed the Tigers to victory. It not only gained them the SEC title, it led to a spot in the national championship game Monday night against Ohio State in the Superdome.

Matchups: LSU offense tough to defend
Smash-mouth game, speed make Tigers threat to score from anywhere
Saturday, January 5, 2008 2:54 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW ORLEANS -- To Luke Fickell, New Orleans looks a lot like patterned wallpaper, carpet, a conference table and swivel chairs.
Fickell, Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator, has not had time to sightsee in the Big Easy, but rather has been huddled with his fellow coaches, trying to figure out how to contain a diverse and powerful Louisiana State offense in the national championship game.
"We don't get to enjoy these trips," Fickell said. "People ask if we've seen this city. No, I haven't. I've seen the meeting rooms; that's about it."

LSU notebook: Pittman relishing second title game

Saturday, January 5, 2008 2:53 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW ORLEANS -- Defensive end Kirston Pittman and tight end Keith Zinger are the only LSU players who played in the Tigers' Bowl Championship Series title game victory over Oklahoma four years ago.
Pittman's advice to his teammates?
"I told the guys you have to grasp the moment because a lot of people really don't get the opportunity to play in the national championship game," he said. "I've been fortunate that this is my second go-around.
"Everything you do has to be better for the national championship game because it is not just a bowl game. It is the game."

Hester takes cue from LSU great Jim Taylor

LSU halfback Jacob Hester, who has become a fan favorite, rushed for 1,017 yards in his first season as a starter.

NEW ORLEANS -- The 72-year-old Hall of Famer noticed the young college running back a couple of years ago.
Jim Taylor could see a little bit of himself in Jacob Hester.
Hester was just a backup then, more fullback than halfback. But Taylor, the bulldozing running back on Vince Lombardi's legendary Green Bay Packers teams of the 1960s, liked the way Hester would lower a shoulder instead of slinking out of bounds. He thought he had potential.
"I thought maybe I could give him some advice along the way," Taylor said yesterday.

Ticket demand breaking broker records

Saturday, January 5, 2008 2:52 AM
By Tracy Turner

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Monday night's national championship game between Ohio State and Louisiana State has generated unprecedented demand for tickets, according to two national ticket companies.
Online ticket brokers StubHub.com and TicketCity.com both said demand is the highest either has experienced.
StubHub.com, based in San Francisco and one of the largest ticket resellers, said it has sold more tickets for the game than any other sporting event, based on dollar volume, since the company began selling tickets in 2000.

If you like defense, you like Ohio State, which allowed only two rushing touchdowns all season. The Tigers' quarterbacks -- Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux -- can move around, the kind of a player that has been a problem for the Buckeyes. Both teams have a penchant for winning close games, which bodes well for a game that might have trouble generating excitement over the next month.

BUCKEYES NOTEBOOK
OSU just fine flying under radar

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

NEW ORLEANS - The Ohio State Buckeyes are here in "The Big Easy," where lively music and zesty food and spicy fun are essential parts of the environment. They don't want the locals to be offended, but the Buckeyes have no plans to partake.

They have been cordial, courteous, and downright gracious in all of their dealings with the local community, the media, and the host city, but they do not want an invitation to any party. No. 1 ranked but clearly the underdogs against LSU in Monday's BCS national championship game, the Buckeyes get stone-faced when football is the fare.

LSU offense has dual identity

New Orleans -- New strategy for the Buckeyes for Monday's BCS National Championship -- imagine LSU's purple and gold as maize and blue.

When Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins looks at the Tigers' offense, he sees the Wolverines.

"They would be kind of like a little bit more diverse Michigan, where they can pound the ball if they want to and then spread you out and throw deep," Jenkins said Friday. "They would fit very well into the Big Ten."
Reminded of Ohio State's recent success against the Wolverines, this comparison must mean good things are ahead of the Buckeyes, right? Jenkins chuckled.
"I think the offense matches up well [for] our defense," he said.

OHIO STATE INSIDER
LSU Tigers' Matt Flynn, Ohio State Buckeyes' Todd Boeckman follow tough acts

Saturday, January 05, 2008

New Orleans- So what's more difficult, replacing the Heisman Trophy winner or replacing the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft? Since Todd Boeckman did one at Ohio State and Matt Flynn did the other at LSU, and both quarterbacked their teams to Monday's BCS National Championship, maybe neither is the correct answer.
"I don't think there are two more highly recognized guys than having to follow the Heisman winner and the No. 1 pick in the draft," Flynn said Friday. "I know he's done a great job following Troy Smith, and I know there are plays JaMarcus [Russell] made that I can't make, but I just tried to put my teammates in the position to make plays."
Flynn, a senior, not only sounds like Boeckman, he waited his turn like the Buckeyes quarterback. Though Boeckman's odyssey at least leaves him with another year of eligibility next season, this is Flynn's one year to get a shot.
