Twenty-four home games, including 15 Sun Belt Conference matchups and a clash with preseason #4 Ole Miss highlight the schedule for the 2008 ASU baseball season, which gets underway Feb. 22 at the Service Academy Classic XVIII in Millington, Tenn.

The Indians open the season against Ohio State at the Service Academy Classic XVIII, then take on Seton Hall and Navy to wrap up the three-day tournament. The home opener is scheduled for Feb. 25 against Williams Baptist College.

The Indians have the kind of schedule we (on this forum) have been wanting for quite a while: half on this season's opponents are in the top 100 in Collegiate Baseball's preseason poll. Collegiate Baseball also picks Arkansas State to win the Sun Belt conference this year.

It's going to be a chilly one in Tennessee this weekend for the Buckeyes 3 games. High today is expected to be 43 with a low of 29 tonight. Same on Saturday and Sunday. No rain is expected, though.

Shuck combined for seven hits and four runs scored to carry the Ohio State Buckeyes to a season-opening, 7-3 victory over Arkansas State in the Service Academies Spring Classic.

Among the many key plays that were made:

Game Notes and Good Stuff from Game 1:
• Two true freshmen started: Ryan Meade played designated hitter and hit in the fifth spot; Dan Burkhart caught and hit sixth. The duo collected their first collegiate hits with back-to-back singles in the second inning. Meade added another single in the seventh and they both scored a run.
• Burkhart also looked calm and in control catching for three different pitchers.
• Second baseman Cory Ruppert made a difficult over-the-shoulder catch of a pop fly in the seventh inning look easy.
• Tony Kennedy was credited with an outfield assist as he gunned down Arkansas State?s Lawson Hipps at the plate in the seventh inning. The play ended the inning and kept the game tied at 3-all.
• Although a red-shirt freshman, Dean Wolosianski joined Meade and Burkhart as a collegiate competition first-timer.
• Both team?s pitching staffs pitched well in the cold and damp conditions. Only four walks were given up all game.
• Arkansas State has Major League Baseball blood lines: Coach Keith Kessinger is the son of longtime Chicago Cub Don Kessinger and sophomore first baseman/pitcher Drew Benes is the son of Andy Benes, the No. 1 pick of the 1988 draft by San Diego who played 15 years in the bigs.
• This was the first meeting between Arkansas State and Ohio State.
• While Ohio State is playing its 125th season of baseball in 2008 Arkansas State, from Jonesboro and the Sun Belt Conference, is playing its 60th season.
• Arkansas State is bussing back and forth each day from Jonesboro, which is about 75 miles west of Millington.
• Official attendance was 245.

Great to see DeLucia get off to a nice start. They'll have to ease him back in and gradually work the pitch counts back up. The bats came alive and we even had a homer - amazing. Watching these infielders field the ball seems to be a carbon copy of last year.

Buckeyes bounce Indians

MILLINGTON, Tenn. ? Ohio State scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie, sending Arkansas State to a 7-3 defeat in both teams? college baseball opener on Friday at the 2008 Service Academies Spring Classic.
?There were so many opportunities today and I?m really disappointed that we didn?t win the ballgame,? Arkansas State head coach Keith Kessinger said. ?We just did some good things, but we also did some things that allowed Ohio State to win the game.?
ASU scored a run on three Buckeye errors in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score, but Ohio State answered with three more runs in the seventh to put the game away.
Junior Jett Jones took the mound in the top of the seventh in relief of starter Chase Ware, who gave up three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts over six innings. Jones struggled, giving up four hits and three runs before being replaced by sophomore Jordan Kimball. ASU averted further damage when senior right fielder Aaron Ferguson threw out the Buckeyes? Justin Miller at home, leaving the Indians behind 6-3. Ferguson also threw out a runner at the plate in the fourth.
