Barry Melrose fired already..

Didn't last long. I figured he'd get more than 16 games to get the team going in the right direction.

ESPN - Tampa Bay Lightning fire Barry Melrose as coach

The Tampa Bay Lightning fired Barry Melrose after just 16 games in his return behind the bench, and associate coach Rick Tocchet will take over as interim head coach.

The Lightning, who made several key offseason acquisitions and got heralded Steve Stamkos as the top pick in the 2008 draft, announced the move Friday afternoon.

"This was a tough decision to make," general manager Brian Lawton said. "Barry is a good man and we have a great deal of respect for him. We wish him nothing but success. However, the results were unacceptable and the players have to understand that we need to be better. Hopefully this change helps push them."

My guess is that Melrose's "airing from my point of view" was more of, "Fuck you, I'll coach the team my fucking way, and if you don't like fucking fire me". He strikes me as someone who won't take shit from anyone, boss or not.

:slappy:

Tampa is trying to get a quick fix when after St. Louis and Lecavilier, they don't have a whole lot other than Steve Stamkos.

So they give the reins to Rick Tocchet, they may not play any better, but the lines should improve

Ryan Malone does look pretty normal without Malkin, doesn't he? And he also benefited from being on Crosby's line for two years (Before moving to Malkin's line). Great PK guy and a good locker room prescence. But, I am not at all surprised by Malone's results thus far.

I don't think anyone truly is.

But hell 5-7-4 with that group isn't that horrible honestly.

It isn't like this team is loaded like Pittsburgh and Detroit and San Jose.

But whatever - I'm sure Melrose will have something to say about it here in a week or so once he gets his gig back at ESPN.

You don't fire an NHL coach after a 5-7-4 start unless there are other factors in play...

Exactly. They have 14 points in 16 games. They had 71 points in 82 games last year. The won/loss record doesn't justify the firing.

Did the mullet make a move on the owner's daughter?
