Bands that shouldn't have broken up

I thought that they were just touring, right?

Hmm, maybe. I thought they were going to record again. Maybe I was wrong, either way, I agree they were a great band.

Edit: You are right, according to Wiki, they have no plans to write/record a new Rage album at this time. Too bad.

Definitely, I wasn't sure about them just playing those couple shows either..

Intriguing list Muck -- so
Which King Crimson - with Greg Lake or Bill Bruford on bass?
Which Mac - with Peter Green (Check) or with Buckingham-Nicks (not so much)?
As for Floyd - I wish Syd hadn't broken up, they wanted Gilmour to join them anyway - can you imagine that troupe?

Do you mean John Wetton on bass? Bruford was the drummer who replaced Ian Wallace. (Boz Burrell was actually in between Wetton & Lake on bass as well.)

Personally I'll take any of the pre "Red" incarnations. Let's face it Robert Fripp was really the sole thread that tied the multitude of lineups together.

I'm actually a fan of the pop version of Mac.

If I were able to choose I'd keep Green with the Bluesbreakers. :)

IMO Waters/Gilmour are THE text book example of a synergy that is greater than the sum of it's parts. Post Floyd Waters' work got farther & farther afield while Gilmour's "Pink Floyd" stagnated.

Waters needed Gilmour to keep him in check and Gilmour needed Waters to push his limits.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.
Soundgarden
Cream
Blind Faith (which, of course, if Cream had not broken up, Blind Faith would not have been... probably.... as the guitars below attest, I've been in a bit of a Clapton mood...)
Traffic.... (See parens above)
Derek and the Dominos (see parens above the parens above)

Many many more.

BTW forgot to add support for some of the previously mentioned groups, especially:

Beatles
Pixies
Soundgarden

If I were able to choose I'd keep Green with with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. :)

Yep Wetton it is on bass for Larks - Court of the Crimson King had Lake on bass.
Bruford was on board when they did Larks Tongues, like you said hitting those skins - and from the original lineup I guess it was Mike Giles who he replaced from Court (after several transitional players).
A lot of really good players passed through Fripp's bands and his auditions.

if death counts then this is a no brainer

jimi hendrix band of gypsys is the greatest band and live album ever. jimi is jimi and that is great, but my god buddy miles is the fucking man.

if hendrix hadn't died, buddy miles would be household name to this day.

if youve never heard the band of gypsys you never heard hendrix at his best (not the double disc release maybe ten years ago; you need the original 6 track and preferably the 9 track import CD as song 7 is fucking unreal).

as if jimi and buddy weren't great enough, that album has the best bass lines on it from billy cox.

no singer could bring it like buddy and he did it while drumming.
