Anybody gone through an ACDF disc replacement surgery before? Apparently the C6-C7 disc is bulging badly enough that the doc thinks surgery is the best option.

I'm just thrilled at that prospect....

How does that happen?

Edit: I know that BKB will be dying to tell us how that happened to you and I'm sure the story will involve hookers or a speed wobble of the hand.

I actually meant mechanically. How would they replace a disc? Do they remove it and fuse the bones or do they now have some kind of artificial disc? My Dad had eight vertebrae fused and it was a problem his entire life.

They go in through the throat and cut out the disc. Then replace it with a piece of bone (not sure if they would take a piece from my hip, use a piece from a cadaver, or use an artificial bone -- all are options) and then maybe put in a plate to hold it in place. The vertebrae above and below should then fuse to the inserted bone graft.

Apparently, spending 15 hours/day at a computer desk for 3 months out of the year is really fucking bad for you. Go figure.

Happens when you go car shopping and say, "Yeah, this is an unsafe ucomfortable tiny piece of shit, but, the price is right, its reliable, with good gas mileage and besides I hate driving anyway, so I'll tough it out."

DOESN'T SEEM LIKE SUCH A BARGAIN NOW DOES IT, KATT?

I've gone through it twice, both times they went in through the throat. The first time they took a piece of bone and fused the vertebrae. The second time they put in a titanium plate. The only negative long term affect was loss in range of motion of my neck, and that was minimal until they put in the plate. Hope it goes well for you.

2nd opinion should be consulted first. Surgery should be the last option. Not saying your Doc sucks, but the repercussions are a bitch especially in that area of the spine. But if surgery is required: background the surgeon, facilities, and rehab timeline. I was on an ortho floor this last semester and dealt with a lot of post op hips, knees, back, and neck surgeries. So if you want a rundown of what to expect afterwards, I can lay it out for you.

Definitely going to get a second opinion. I've got my sister checking with some of her colleagues on who is good, so I've got a solid source of good info. I definitely was not expecting surgery to be the option today....the issue has only been going on for a month, so I was expecting to try some PT first....maybe a cortisone shot. I've already done a fair bit of reading online for the recuperation and as far as surgery recup goes, it doesn't seem too bad overall....relatively speaking. But I'm absolutely terrified that something could go wrong and I could end up with a lifetime of pain far worse than what I've got right now.

Thank you -- I really appreciate the recommendations.
