Baby Einstein videos dont make kids smart

  • So you mean putting your child in front of the tv for a few hours a day wont make them smarter, who would have thought that?

    LINK

For every hour a day that babies 8 to 16 months old were shown such popular series as "Brainy Baby" or "Baby Einstein," they knew six to eight fewer words than other children, the study found.

My nephew who is almost three was basically raised on Baby Einstein. The boy is pretty bright (e.g. he can count to at least 12 in English, Spanish, Hebrew, and by signing it), but he has zero attention span and is addicted to watching videos--go figure. I realize he is only three, but it is impossible to hold his attention for more than 3 minutes unless it is a cartoon on television or video.

i think it helps to an extent. It helps them know shapes/colors/numbers/sounds.

My daughter used to watch it to fall asleep to. There are very few words in the ones we had so I can see where this article is coming from but to say that it doesnt make them smart is just not right.

I agree. We used them at night when we wanted our son to calm down and get into sleep mode. It did exactly that. We always sat with him, we didn't use the TV as a babysitter.

And, we have a couple of the Baby Einstein videos about animals and transportation (cars, trains, etc.) that have plenty of dialogue- I do believe that he learned from these.

I think the key thing is the parent interaction. The videos can be great because they start a young age, but if you just sit the kid down in front of the tv all day to watch these things then of course they will have a negative effect.

I love how stupid some people are.(not you DE, just used your qoute because I agree with it.

That would be my sister-in-law. For their entire 2-1/2 years, she has used Dora and Baby Einstein (and various other shows/movies) as babysitting tools for my twin niece and nephew so she can do something else in another room. Nothing silly like (god forbid!) cleaning or laundry, but vitally important stuff like movies and video games.

And she and her boyfriend are surprised that the kids are behind in their vocabularies and communications. Guess what, dipshits! Being premature is no longer a valid excuse for your kids poor development!

    Fuckin' degenerates. :shake:

I can't possibly imagine that using Baby Einstein as a bedtime tool is a bad thing, nor would I expect it to be any better or worse than most other children's television as far as promoting development when watched in moderate amounts, but....and here's the kicker......no video is magically going to make your child smart!

p.s. That isn't directed at anyone in this thread. :)

    I never trusted those videos.
That's why from the time he was 6 months old I showed my son porn before bed. It never really was a problem until preschool. Whenever he was having trouble getting the shapes to fit into the proper hole in the box he would spit on the hole and try to force the block in. His teachers could never understand why. :wink2:

And here I though you were about to sing the praises of a "live" babysitter...

    My apologies.
