Does anyone else find themselves rooting for the core Big Ten schools (other than Michigan and, if you consider them one, PSU)? I'm watching this Iowa-Rutgers game and I should be rooting for former Buckeye DC Schiano and his Scarlet Knights, but I just can't do it. Is my sentiment unique, or do others feel this way in this age of realignment and the breakdown of tradition. Damn, I feel old, almost like @BB73.
 
Mostly like Jax, I don't give a shit about the performance of other B1G teams. I am on record as saying I like Minnesota when they're not playing Ohio State, and I do, but it's not a "rooting" interest. Seems to me a "rooting" interest" comes with emotional consequences. I'd love it if Minnesota beat scUM but I am not gonna feel anything if they do.... at least not in terms of Minnesota. I'll feel might good about laughing at scUM (But, that's Ohio State rooting interest coming through)... a better example is when Minnesota loses to scUM. I don't feel anything.

I don't root for or against "core" Big Ten teams, but I probably do have a hierarchy of teams I like/dislike. I don't know what it is, exactly. I always liked Purdue, until Danny Hope got there. But since he's been gone, they've moved back up my list. I'm surprised how much I've liked Wisconsin once Bert left. And I never minded Wisconsin when Barry Alvarez was there. Add, oddly enough, I don't mind Illinois with Bert there.
I have a neutral opinion of most Big Ten teams. I tend to root for who I think is an underdog, so my rooting interest loses a lot.
I didn't watch Rutgers vs Iowa last night. But if I had, I'd probably root for Rutgers, since they're the little guy.

For me the more interesting (difficult) issue is on those rare occasions where it would be better if SCUM would have an outcome that would not suck for them (*see note below) and would be better for OSU if they did (have a outcome that did not suck for them). On those rare occasions, my brain tells the rest of me to pull for the better outcome for SCUM, but the rest of me rebels and I end up cheering for the correct outcome. I would like to give you an example of when this has happened, but right now I can't think of one. I assume that is because my subconscious is protecting me from remembering this trauma.

Note- I apologize for the obtuse wording of this sentence. My brain told my fingers to type Michigan and win in one sentence. My fingers told my brain to fuck off. They finally agreed on this compromise.

Try to watch the 'others', but the level/intensity/lovability, simply not there. Sat down to watch Illinois/Indiana last week, but found myself channel surfing to Scifi channel, etc at every opportunity. During bowls always root for B10 teams, but don't necessarily watch them. And when Xichigan plays the SEC in a bowl, root for an earthquake to swallow 'em both up. (without hurting anyone, of course). I've got more miles on me than most of the posters to BP, so these feelings are rooted deeply, but there it is. Go Bucks!

Both of these are true, for me. I don't know how. I can't explain it.
Until about 2014, I typically would root for Big Ten in neutral games. Except the cheaters - I didn't root for them. But that ended around 2014, when we'd get reports that the Big Ten was richer than other conferences. "So these Big Ten teams have more money than SEC teams, and they aren't spending it on the football teams?" I figured that Ohio State was the only one pulling their weight in the conference. So eff the other teams. At that time, I felt Ohio State and Sparty were the only ones playing above their level. And maybe I should have given credit to Wisconsin, at that time. But Illinois, Penn State, *ichigan, Nebraska.... they were all shitting in their bed. So eff them.
Today, it's still sorta true. Penn State has improved. Sparty has fallen back to where Sparty should be. *ichigan cheated their way to some success. Indiana is now WAY above their level. But Nebraska, Wisconsin - they're still shitting the bed. USC, UCLA - what are you doing? Time will tell if Illinois is as good as we thought they might be. Time will tell if the Big Ten can use their "richest conference" title to any good.

But yeah, I'll root for most Big Ten teams over most SEC teams.
