Big Ten won't allow football players to return from NFL

The Big Ten has passed a rule that stops players returning from the NFL from playing for one of its schools.

Any player who has declared for the NFL draft and did not withdraw, appeared on an NFL roster or signed a contract with a pro league cannot be on a Big Ten roster, the league announced Tuesday in a statement.

The Big Ten's athletic directors unanimously approved the rule, which then received unanimous approval later Tuesday from the conference's faculty athletic representatives, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Any teams in violation of the rule would be subject to its head coach being suspended for 50 percent of its remaining games plus an undisclosed fine, the Big Ten confirmed.

"The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday the unanimous adoption of a conference rule to prohibit football players who have signed a professional contract, were on a professional roster at any point or declared for the NFL Draft as an underclassman without withdrawing, from maintaining eligibility for athletic competition at a conference institution," the league said. "The conference continues to evaluate potential rules restricting professional athletes in other sports from conference competition."

The SEC announced a similar ban later on Tuesday.

I know this take will not be popular, but I’m gonna show my dumb ass anyway.

The argument of not taking nfl players to “protect the integrity of the game” is futile. The game has long been compromised.

College football is a minor league nfl now.

In the mlb, players get sent down to the minors all the time for various reasons. Same with the band d-league. The nfl has used CFB as a farm system for years, so if a player cst quite make the cut in the nfl, why not let them come back to college?

If you want to say that it would be a total
Shit show, well I’d agree. But it already is regardless, so who gives a fuck really. Plus fuck the nfl for various reasons and if this is a way to stick it to them, I’m all for it.

Well you’re all for it I suspect because you stand to gain as a fan lol.

I agree the NCAA is basically the minor league but college is different than the pros. It’s a school not a franchise when it’s all said and done.

I suppose the loophole is why not just go back to school for an advanced or different degree? If you’re in school then that’s what matters. I can see the loophole in that

I can't stand this defeatist, apathetic mindset and it's so prevalent in society. "This shit already sucks and is fraught with corruption and greed, so why not let it degrade even further". Maybe we start chipping away at making positive changes to the system instead? This seems like a reasonable start. A league still needs rules and regulations to prosper, even if the framework has been drastically altered from what it was. It won't go back to what it was pre-NIL and transfer portal, but we should strive to do a hell of a lot better than this grotesque circus act the sport has become

Or just burn it down and start from scratch

Probably the wrong thread but I’m increasingly disgusted with the players. It’s never the OSU players TBH and it’s not a homer take either. It’s not OSU kids because if they aren’t good enough they transfer and if they are they’re gone in 3-4 years anyways.

It’s the players that Indiana gets. It’s the MAC level or Diego Paavia kids that can’t cut it in the NFL and decide to Van Wilder their way to retirement money.

Indiana did more harm than good last year by showing the blue print that you don’t really need to be elite. You just need to be old as fuck and willing to drop 10-20 mil.

This was never the intention of NIL and it’s bull shit. They win every court lawsuit, they get every opportunity, and the answer is never No. Sure there were dozens of decades the opposite was true but two wrongs don’t make it right either.

The structure should be somewhere between the old system and this new Wild West.

I think the college to pros comparison is closer to the small market to big market comparison within MLB - not so much the MLB to minor leagues. True, the small market teams in the MLB play against big market teams, but the college football teams don't play NFL teams. But the MLB teams are tied directly, through some agreement, somewhere, to the minor league teams. The Washington Nationals can't go into Columbus and call up the Clippers' first baseman. Unless a trade is made, the Clippers' first baseman can only go to the Guardians while he's under contract.

If the Browns don't like their quarterback (I chose that team and position on purpose) they can't send him down to Purdue and call up Purdue's quarterback.

If a player can't quite make the cut in the NFL, we now have whatever that Spring league is. It used to be the XFL, and maybe it was the AAFL or UFL or something. There's also Arena football. There's other options.

Yeah, "the game" has been compromised - I agree. But that doesn't mean we should drop the cherry bomb into the toilet. In another thread someone pointed out to me that this would open the door to shady roster management techniques. The NCAA probably cannot stop all teams from taking players who didn't cut it in the NFL, but the schools, themselves, can choose to not take them, and the conferences can try to control their teams. I think this move by the Big Ten and SEC to stop this is a good attempt to say to the rest of the country, "We want to try to maintain the old way of things - that we want to protect college players and show that we want to protect the integrity of the game."

So, I'm not much of a fan of college basketball. I just don't watch it much. But, my understanding is that you got a handful of 5-star dudes who are in college for 1 year before going to the NBA. The teams that get those players might make it deep into the NCAA tournament, but rarely win it all. The winners of the NCAA tournament are the ones with solid upperclassmen - mostly Juniors and Seniors who probably won't make long-term NBA careers.

The difference could be that the football, the players need to hang out for 3 years, compared to the 1 year in basketball. But Indiana and *ichigan showed that the team of 5th year players is often better than the team of 5-stars. That's just how it is.

It's not a question of whether the system is broken. It's whether you can cobble together some semblance of a tribe and hints a of a religion.

It's not going to last for long, but for a little while there's an old generation that remembers the enjoyable lies and indoctrination of cfb. Where your guys were honorable defenders against the duplicitous scoundrels from rival schools and conferences.

You can pay kids whatever you want, but there are consequences to cohesion

You can resign players (maybe) after they leave, but there are consequences. And the only one doing it is a coach who has to do extreme did not to get fired. And the acceptable floor for his performance is one championship in the next 4 years. So he's incredibly desperate.
