B1G Coaches of the Year

MililaniBuckeye

The satanic soulless freight train that is Ohio St
  • Did a Google search for a thread on this and didn't find one (although I'm sure one exists since BP has been around for 11 1/2 years now). In the J.T. Barrett thread we made some quick comments about who'd be this year's COY and that Ferentz would win it yet again, just because. So, I decided to see just how many times an Ohio State head coach has won the conference coach of the year. The answer: Thrice (Woody in 1973 and 1975, and Bruce in 1979). In fact, every other long-standing B1G team has had a head coach win since Bruce did (I left out newcomers Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers). Hell, Joe Pedturdo has as many COY awards (1994, 2005, 2008) as does our program. The award started in 1972 with Schembechler being the first recipient and Woody the second. It's mind-boggling that Northwestern has more winners than does Ohio State (Dennis Green in 1982, Gary Barnett in 1995 and 1996, and Randy Walker in 2000). With the exception of Woody in 1973 (10-0-1) and Pedturdo in 1994 (12-0), no winner coached an unbeaten team, so if your team goes undefeated you can forget about being COY.

Don't know about previous, but think last year there was just 1 thread for all general B1G Awards? Maybe?

Anyway imo the B1G Participation Award is Kill's to lose right now, and by that I mean he only needs to not lose twice. Andersen is next in line, and Ferentz is the dark horse if he beats both Neb and Wiscy.

Since the head coach of Ohio St is ineligible for the B1G CoY award, I say Kill has the inside track as long as Minnesota wins one of their next two games. After him, Edsall if Maryland wins out (Michigan, Rutgers remain -- doable) and finishes 8-4. If so, Maryland's losses would be to Ohio St, Michigan St, and Wisconsin, plus the 3 point loss to WVU. Respectable record for their first year in the league.

Would be a nice little recruiting boost to the new kids on the east coast block- being able to tote that Coach of the Year award.

Not sure how much 'politics' comes in to play since it's a Media and Coaches award.
