Austrailian wines are very good. Yellowtail is probably the biggest seller now, it's very cheap, and it's not bad. Lindeman's has been mentioned- they have pretty good wines. Yangarra (I think Clarity mentioned that) is very good.

Some others worth looking at:
Rosemount Estate
Penfold's
The Little Penguin - this is relatively new in the US, it isn't very expensive, and is quite good.
Shotfire Ridge - My favorite. It can be hard to find, and the price is rising a bit ($17-$20), but their Shiraz is fantastic. They also make a very good blend- Cuvee.
Shingleback - great Shiraz, $17 ish.
Brokenwood Cricket Pitch
Wishing Tree - very good Shiraz, pretty low price ($8-$12)

If it's the Shiraz that your wife likes, also try looking at Syrah wines from California. Syrah and Shiraz are the same grape- we call it one thing, the Aussies call it another. There are a lot of good CA Syrahs (and Petit Syrahs) that are worth looking at.

Ironically, though... Syrah/Shiraz and "Petit Sirah", "Petite Syrah", or "Petit Syrah", have very little to do with each other.

I bought a bottle of wine a couple of weeks ago and I know nothing about wine. Fortunately, the store I went to had ratings in front of most of the wines. The rating sheets included reviews from magazines and newspapers. That was nice.

Now I remember why I do not buy wine: I am not a wine drinker. Opened up a bottle of some decent Cabernet for Christmas dinner, had three sips and poured it down the drain. I have never liked the taste of wine. Give me a good beer any day.
