Breaking News: Shooting at Apartment Complex in Auburn

WHNT NEWS 19 is working on breaking news about a shooting at an apartment complex near Auburn University. Multiple news outlets, including the student newspaper, report the shooting happened at University Heights apartment complex on Longleaf Drive.

There are reports two to three people were killed.

At the time, there is very limited confirmed information. Chatter on social media indicates that current and past football players may have been involved in the shooting. WHNT NEWS 19 has not been able to confirm that. We are calling our sources at the police department and Auburn sports department.

Won't get into speculation, but a there's been chatter about 2 former Auburn players being confirmed dead, with another current player currently at the hospital.

Official statements will be made later this morning.

Auburn shooting witness: "Went from us chilling to a massacre"

By Mike Morris

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
AUBURN, Ala. -- The Saturday night shootings of several people at an off-campus apartment complex catering to Auburn University students started as an argument over a woman, a witness said.

Turquorius Vines, who is not a student at Auburn, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he was partying with several friends, including former Auburn football players, at the University Heights complex a couple of miles from campus shortly before midnight when the gunfire broke out.
?It was about a female,? Vines told the AJC Sunday morning. ?It started from a female. We were trying to get away from the trouble and it ended up right in our face.?
The party ?went from us chilling with all these females to a massacre for no reason at all,? Vines said. ?It happened so quick, in about a second.?

...and more details start coming out...

Vines said he punched one of the men, while his friend hit both of the men over the head with a bottle. Either one or both of the two men then started shooting, he said. He said his friend was shot and killed, while two others also were hit by gunfire. Vines said he had never before seen the men who he had been arguing with.

So much could be said about something so needlessly tragic and stupid, but it would be moot. I just hope that maybe someone out there will remember this incident before escalating a pissing contest to this level. What a waste.
