Auburn +7.5 at LSU (ov/un 49.5)

this is by far my favorite game of the year pretty much since i was a kid. actually, I wouldn't put money on this game.

LSU/Auburn has been a strange series over the last decade or so.
lots of crazy things have happened when we've met on the field.

A rundown of some of my favorites:



  • '88 (@ LSU) was the earthquake game. LSU wins 7-6 on a TD pass with just over a minute to go
  • '94, (@ Auburn) Jamie Howard (LSU QB) threw 5 ints in the 4th qtr, 3 returned for TD, as Auburn came back from down 23-9 to win it 30-26.
  • '95 (@ LSU) was the night LSU "brought back the magic". Auburn players and fans still claim to have heard a refs whistle down deep in their own end. Auburn QB (Nix?) just stopped and stood in his own endzone until he was buried by LSU's d-line. Final play of the game was a pass into corner of the endzone that LSU intercepted to preserve a 12-6 LSU victory.
  • '96 (@ Auburn) Auburn's old field house catches fire and burns outta control next door to the stadium. watching on TV, flames could be seen shooting into the sky above the stadium walls. Late in the 4th, Auburn scores a TD and goes for two to try and tie the game. LSU instead gets a defensive 2 pt conversion. LSU holds on to win 19-15.
  • '97 (@ LSU) was another great one. Cecil Collins went OFF on Auburn 185 yards rushing against a very stout Auburn D. Auburn won it 31-28. but this is by far the best loss i've ever witnessed in person. hell of a game, and death valley was rocking that night. Auburn blocked a 63 yd game tying FG attempt as time expired.
  • '01 (@ LSU) this game was supposed to be played the week of Sept. 11, but was moved to the weekend after thanksgiving. As luck would have it, this game would decide who would represent the west in atlanta. Auburn goes out and jumps around on the eye at midfield, getting a 15 yd penalty. LSU pulls the surprise onside kick on the opening kick-off and gets ball 1st and score. Auburn's kicker tries to pick a fight with the LSU band at the end of halftime. LSU wins it 27-14 to clinch our 1st berth in SEC CG.
  • '04 (@ Auburn) LSU holding on to a 9-3 lead late (missed a PAT on opening drive). Aburn gets the game tying TD wih less than 2 min to play, and lines up for the go ahead PAT. MISSED IT (a common theme with this guy as you'll soon find out). but the official toses a flag and calls "leverage" on LSU cb Ronnie Prude, giving Vaughn another shot at it. Never before or since have I ever seen that penalty called. He makes this one to give the win to Auburn 10-9
  • '05 (@ LSU) Auburn RB Kenny Irons get off the bus at Death Valley and tells ESPN cameras he's gonna rush for 200 yds on a solid LSU defense. Then he goes out and gains 218. game goes into OT tied @ 17 thanks in large part to John Vaughn's 4 missed fg. LSU get a FG on their 1st possession. Auburn can't really move the ball, and has to settle for a FG. buuuuut, mr Vaughn hits the upright for his 5th miss of the game. LSU 20-17.
  • '06 (@ Auburn) a defensive slugfest. LOTS of hard hitting and not much offense in this one. Game known by LSU fans as ref-gate. SEVERAL really questionable calls had LSU faithful up in arms, but the last one was the real kicker. Late in 4th qtr, 4th down, Jamarcus Russell throws deep over the middle to Early Ducet who is getting prison raped by an Auburn DB. ref throws the flag, marks off 15 yds for pass interference, 1st down LSU. But wait, nevermind. Ref decides ball was deflected, therefore no penalty, and unmarks the yardage, Auburn possession. 1st and only time i've ever seen a penalty announced, marked off, and THEN waived off. LSU got one last crack at it, but Buster Davis was tackled at the AU 3 yard line as time ran out. Auburn 7-3. (P.S. John Vaughn missed a FG in this game too)
  • '07 (@LSU) Auburn clinging to a 1 pt lead late in 4th. LSU appears to be just milking last 30 seconds and positioning themselves for a game winning FG. Instead, a ballsy move by LSU has Matt Flynn throwing into the end zone to D-Byrd for the game winning TD with 1 second on clock. LSU 30-24
  • '08 (@ Auburn) another great back and forth game. LSU appears to have no QB. Jarrett Lee looks dreadful in 1st half, 0-5 with a pick 6. But suddenly in the 2nd half, he looked like Joe Montana. Twice leading LSU from behind to take the lead. The last time with 1:15 on clock to give LSU a 26-21 win. First time the road team won in this series since '99.

Sorry about the lengthy post, but for some reason, there always seems to be some kinda voodoo in the air when we play these guys. That's what I love about this rivalry, and how they climbed so high on my shit list.


Anyone expecting a blow out is pretty much dreaming. Since 1980, only 7 times has this game been decided by more than a TD

I remember that PI call waved off in '06. The PI occurred before the ball was tipped, although the ball was tipped just before it reached Doucet.

And of course Les rolling the dice as the clock was winding down in '07, although it was reasonable to think with that play call that there would have been time left after an incomplete pass - but it obviously ended up being very close clock-wise.

edit - and your long post did nothing for the over/under on the vBet that depends solely on you. :wink2:

a roller coaster of emotion on that play.
Happy as phuck when I saw the flag. Felt like stabbing someone in the throat with a red hot poker when the waved it off.

Les gets a bad rap for that one. I think it was more on our QB. Flynn broke the huddle with 17 seconds left, but let he clock tick all the way down to 7 before calling for the snap. probably was supposed to get the snap off with about :12 to go to make sure we had time for a FG attempt.

In general terms it's OK, but not when referring directly to another BP poster. Unless it's that inbred redneck lawyer living in your state that roots for his alma mater - that state with the keys.
