I'm not looking at it, but trying to advise a friend on a small, portable laptop.

I think I can speak for the creators of this when I say the focus was never on running vista. The point is mobility and function (with emphasis on the mobility). It really just needs the basics (which is what the Eee seems to do well).

I would think the lack of HD can be overcome with an external drive. Hard disk space is dirt cheap, solid state disks (like the one on the Eee) are expensive. I'd be willing to take that trade-off.

I'm really digging for someone with experience here, I can read the tech specs...

That hard drive is so small it probably can't run Vista and very many programs. Pass on it.

Why in gods name would you want to run Vista if all you need is a portable laptop to do simple things on it? The Eee PC has instant-on, is super light, great battery life, and a webcam in the higher models.

I've never used one, but my friend who travels often bought one recently and loves it. She can slip it in her carry-on without having to lug a laptop case. There seems to be a very active user base, as well. I'm considering getting my mom one, FWIW.

Tiny screen size is a major pain in most lighting situations. Combine that with limited usability and you wonder why would anyone want to go that route? And there isn't a big price difference between these minis and full size notebooks.

The HP 2133 looks like a much better(but more expensive) machine.
