Arrggghh! Dental Insurance? Other Dental Discount Programs?

Am I Allowed To Say That?

OMG, I hate dealing with this crap.

I hated the dentist who took my UnitedHealthcare insurance so much that I haven't been back. Now, I'm looking at various dental-only insurance plans (Humana for $14.99/month), plus other discount programs like "Smile Protection Plan" that one chain of offices offers for a $69 up front fee, plus free x-rays, cheaper cleanings, etc.

I mostly just want to be able to get competent regular cleanings without getting slammed with a $3-400 fee for the damn x-rays, which they all want to do at least twice a year.

Anyway, anybody have experience with using insurance, or dentists who offer discount programs? I'd appreciate your feedback.

I have asked at the dentist office... their reply 'unless your program is via an employer, and most likely only if a major company... the best any dental insurance offers is break even on routine cleanings.. and only then if you adhere to a strict routine of every 6 mths' FWIW

PS I got great advice years ago when relocating... when you're looking for a dentist, contact an orthodontist... ask for a recommendation... they see everyone's work.. they know who is good, great and shitty... they'll never tell you who is shitty... but they do know the top ones

Working for a health care provider lo these many years, UnitedHealthcare is shit. A lot of providers stop accepting them (we did) because they do everything can to not pay the claim, so the ones who do probably can't get on panels with better insurance companies. There are usually reasons for that, and to avoid them.

Every dentist I know says you need an x-ray once a year, at most. Anyone trying to give you one every 6 months is just ripping you off.

It's been my experience that the dentists I've paid out of pocket for (and there have been several) always seem to want to do x-rays more than once a year, and refuse to schedule cleanings unless I'm willing to pony up for the dose of radiation, too. It's been incredibly frustrating.

Refuse to schedule cleanings if you don't agree to an x-ray? Wow. I've never encountered that, and if I did my response would probably be considered rude by some.

I turn down x-rays at my dental office every year - they don't tell me to go away.
