An Army football player was among those hospitalized in Florida after several West Point cadets overdosed on fentanyl-laced cocaine at an Airbnb party house, according to the US Military Academy.

An official told the Associated Press that another football player was also at the house but was not hospitalized. None of the names were released, and the official could not give the hospitalized player’s condition.

Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Steve Gollan also told the AP that of the six victims, two were in critical condition on ventilators, two were in stable condition, one was in good condition and one victim was released.

Also on Friday, authorities made an arrest in the overdoses.

Wilton Manors Police confirmed the arrest but did not identify the suspect or provide additional details, according to WSVN.

West Point officials said they were investigating the incident Thursday, and did not identify the students.

The six New York cadets — all men in their early 20s — had been partying at a house north of Fort Lauderdale on their spring break, neighbors said.

I'm guessing that West Point has a ZERO tolerance for this and all the cadets involved will have their appointment to the academy revoked. With that being said, I do hope everyone fully recovers and gets any and all the professional help they might need.

Anyway Army will probably be down 2 football players, etc.

Sucks this happened to them and for the players who will probably be done playing.

But silver-lining is it seems like they'll live. That fentanyl stuff is deadly. I know of a lot of people, many of them young, who have died from it.

Brand new LTs from USMA are always a wild ride. They are finally on their own and some try to live out "normal" college life at their first duty station. Add bravado and usually a shitty Army town/scene and it is game over to their career. These cats just jumped the gun a bit.

“We’ve been hearing over the last couple of days, loud music, gatherings,” Dana Fumosa, who lives next door to the Airbnb, told the outlet. “It was guys and girls over there. They seemed to be having a good time barbecuing, and they were in the pool.”

Yeah; girls, booze, loud music, and maybe some marijuana are in the category of "normal college life"; however, I sure hope that snorting/smoking (or however they ingested it) fentanyl laced cocaine isn't considered normal college life these days.

I don't know if it will apply in a situation like this, but students can be hit with a bill for the education they received and West Point charges at Ivy levels.

According to the interwebs:

  1. Medical Reasons. If you are being medically discharged due to health reasons, then nothing happens. If you complete all four years, you might even be entitled to VA benefits depending on when and how you incurred the injury.
  2. Change of heart. No penalty if you make the decision before the beginning of your Junior Year.
  3. Academic/Honor/Physical Fitness Deficiencies. The Academy much like the Regular Army sets a standard in which you must be able to pass. There is also a lenient grace period of rehabilitation. If you cannot correct the deficiencies, then you might be expelled. It depends on when you fail to meet the standards. If it is after your Sophomore year after you signed your Army contract, then you may be sent to the Army as a Specialist (E4) to finish out your contract. I’ve also seen cases where those individuals return to the Academy to finish out their time.
  4. Family Emergency. West Point is fairly reasonable if you need to take a leave of absence.
