Mitch Mustain, who passed for a touchdown against Oregon, would start at quarterback for USC if Mark Sanchez is unable to play this week against Arizona State.

Mark Sanchez sits as Mitch Mustain takes snaps at USC

Trojans' starting quarterback is unable to practice because of a knee injury suffered in win over Oregon. Sanchez hopes to play this week but backup Mustain is being prepped to start if needed.

Arizona State's Rudy Carpenter (during a break against Stanford on Sept. 6, 2008) says, "I feel like as long as I can walk then I can play."

Carpenter questionable for USC

Rudy Carpenter walked into a news conference Monday without answers about his injured ankle or Arizona State's struggling offense.
"I just want to play," Carpenter said of what would be his 37th consecutive start Saturday at No. 8-ranked Southern California. "You work so hard to play, and you don't want to let anything keep you out. I feel like as long as I can walk, then I can play. Realistically we'll have to take it day by day at practice."
Carpenter suffered an injury to a non-weight bearing projection on the back of his left ankle early in the fourth quarter at California last week. If the senior isn't "close to 100 percent," coach Dennis Erickson said, junior Danny Sullivan will get the first start of his career against the nation's fourth-ranked defense.
"I don't think it's fair to the guys on our team who work really hard to put me out there if I can't give them the best opportunity to win," said Carpenter, who was in a walking boot. "If coach thinks I can give them the best opportunity, then I think he'll let me play. If I can't, then he'd be doing the right thing by putting in the best guy to play."

Sanchez is not out yet, tests on knee were negative, but has alittle swelling, so Mustain is running with the first team as if MS wont play.
Rudy Carpenter is on crutches, so dont know if he will be able to play.
