Prosecutors: Incestuous relationship motivated shooting spree

By the Associated Press

COLUMBUS | Prosecutors will allege in an upcoming trial that a man's desire to continue an incestuous relationship with his daughter led him to fatally shoot her and two others.

Prosecutors discussed the incestuous relationship between John Richard Mayhew Jr., 37, and his 18-year-old daughter, Kristina McKibben, during a hearing Friday before U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David DeVillers said prosecutors will argue during the trial scheduled to begin Aug. 1 that McKibben wanted to end the relationship, angering her father.

Authorities said that on Aug. 7, 2003, Mayhew shot and killed his ex-wife and her fiance in Columbus, then kidnapped McKibben and drove her to West Virginia.

Mayhew is charged with kidnapping that resulted in a death, interstate stalking, committing a crime with a firearm and possession of explosive devices. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
