Will take possession of a new home on November 2 that has a koi pond. Anyone have experience with these? I'm going to have to educate myself real quick on them, especially on how to keep them alive through a NE Ohio winter.

I think those guys are hardy. My ex actually had koi moon boots (this was stylish apparently) and a koi pond in SE Ohio.

I have a tank, with no fish. I have no idea why I maintain it. It is a memory to the fish I killed I guess. Protip: when you leave town for a week or two adjust the heater if you turn the A/C off.

I think your biggest problem will be predatory birds as opposed to temperatures. Our next door neighbor finally gave up on koi after having 20 or so of them taken by owls.

My wife's first Mercedes was a gray-market car purchased by a guy who bought them in Norway and boated them over to the States. He had a koi pond that was entirely indoors - you walked into the house, looked down through the glass floor in his foyer, and there were the fish. Seriously, seriously cool.

Racoons like them too. But, yeah, you're announcing to the area meat eaters, "Free Carp" - I suppose if the current owner will know what measures he's taken to solve that problem. As to the winter, if its aerated and deep enough to not freeze completely you'll be ok.

Biggest predator concern will be blue heron as there is a large nesting area for them about a mile east of the property. The current owner has thin ropes running across the pond to keep them out. We've requested instructions from the owners on how to care for the fish, but haven't received a response yet.

My original inclination was to just let the heron have them as I didn't want the headache of taking care of them. However, both my four-year-old daughter and Mrs. Buckeyegrad have made it known that the fish need to stay. We'll see if the ropes mysteriously disappear in November or not.

Good point about the herons. Our neighbors had a problem with those birds as well. Not sure the monofilament they installed had any effect on them.

Good luck, in any case. Koi are beautiful fish if you can keep them viable.
