Anyone in Columbus seeing this lightning..?

Woke me up too, and I don't usually wake up unless the girlfriend wakes me up. She didn't have to this morning. I never really did get back to sleep either. Ended up finally getting out of bed at 4:30 and jumping on BP for an hour, before getting ready for work.

Ugh. Woke me about about 2:50. I went downstairs to pee and check the radar channel for what warnings & watches were in effect. Saw that there weren't any for Franklin County, so I went back upstairs.

I listened to the wind whistle outside the bedroom for about 3 minutes before saying "fuck it" and sleeping on the couch in the basement.

I don't know how many of you remember, but my Florida house was struck by lightning some time before I moved back to Ohio. I was the only one home at the time, and to date that was the loudest noise I've heard in my life. Huge flash, everything turned off, a cracking/snapping sound so loud you wouldn't believe it, and instantly there was a burning/melting/fried circuit boards smell all over the place and fire detectors were going off all over the house.

Happily there was no fire, but most of the electronics in the house were destroyed, and the bolt punched a substantial hole right through our roof into the attic where it connected with the ungrounded DirecTV gateway with all the coaxial outs (thanks local DTV contractor!).

Anyway, I still love storms like last night's, but I admit to being a little apprehensive when lightning gets close. I'd rather not experience that again.

That storm didnt seem nearly as bad, at least in the dublin area, as the one we had a month or so ago.
One strike did wake me up, it must have been very close as it shoke the whole house and sent the dog into a howling frenzy.
But the TV didnt show anything serious so I went right back to sleep :)

The storm wasn't bad at all here (west campus), it was just insane lightning.

Lightning storms are by far my favorite as long as something like what you had to go through, Clarity, doesn't happen. Heat lighting when it's pitch black out or storms that just produce lighting are awesome. It's amazing to see how much power can come out of something just between the charges of the ground and the clouds.

Opposite experience here. That storm that went through Columbus last month completely missed us in Lancaster since it followed 70 East and hit Buckeye Lake. We could see it for probably an hour or more, but didn't get 5 minutes of light rain. The storm yesterday morning, on the other hand, went directly over our house. Wife and I are going through an insurance claim right now for loss of groceries (fridge/freezer -- power is still out, now over 24 hours) plus water damage in the basement.

We got the big 'ole fat rain and the rain that blew in sideways and even the rain that seemed to come from straight up underneath. But the lightning around our home was just absolutely ridiculous. It might as well have been the grand finale of Red, White & Boom, because it was just a constant barrage of lightning strikes and thunder.

Typically, whatever weather Ohio gets, it takes about a day to reach me out in Philly. Well right on point, 24 hours after the first post here, we got drilled by the same storm, insane amounts of lightning. We had no power for about six hours, which is great when it's still hot as hell outside.

Insurance adjuster came by last night. Chimney caps were ripped off, which lead to rain water coming down the chimney and pooling in the fireplace in the basement. Probably have 30-40 gallons of water in the basement, soaking into the carpet and wood. Still don't have power. :smash:

Pisses me off because I could have had the whole mess cleaned up in a couple of hours with the Shop-Vac and the dehumidifier and a couple of fans if we had power restored Tuesday morning when it went out.

Didn't go the generator route because we live off a major route through the city, and not too far from a highway. We're in a neighborhood that is one of those top priorities to get power restored, so even after the most severe weather we're rarely out for more than a couple of hours.

If I had known Tuesday we'd be out until Thursday, I would have ponied up the money then. :(
