Anyone Buying a New Car From the Big Three?

Just curious if anyone out there has jumped at the "employee" price sales by the Big 3? I am two years away from looking for a new vehicle so I have not, but the prices for some of the vehicles are pretty dramatic. I have a friend who will probably replace one of his vehicles a little earlier than he planned. This is one effect that will be interesting to watch: what happens to their sales in the near future if all this is doing is moving sales forward?
 
we got a loaded trailblazer about a month ago (when it 1st started). They took 9500 off the sticker, after the discounts, the price on the loaded one was only 800 more than the base model. and it was the easiest sales experience that i have ever had. didn't have to haggle prices for my trade either, they called to find the payoff and gave that too us (1500 over KBB)

Look for the other upshot -- glut of second hand autos, likely to be some real bargains in a few months time.

Always let someone else buy that new car smell - its not worth thousands of dollars.

i agree with that, but from where i was standing, i could get the new one for nearly the same price as the used one, so why not.

That's why the used market is going to have to decrease as well... trickle down effect... I'm not in the market for a car, however I'd guess you could find some great deals in a little while in the used market...

I am seriously thinking about changing my oil.

I expect just as with the initial 0% loans there will be a lot of good deals on used cars soon.

The local Ford dealer has been showing a 2005 HD F-250. Sticker is $52K. I imagine you could get it for $40-42K. I could take the section 179 deduction and save another $10K off taxes. That puts it at $30K.

I think I will just change the oil.

I already get the GM discount from my Grandfather. It will be nice to get a new car and not have to call him for the discount. He gets pretty uptight about his discount sometimes. I have an Impala that is coming off its lease in a few days. I am going to downsize and get either a Saturn Ion or a Chevy Cobalt. I just bought a trailblazer for the wifea few months ago so I am looking to save a little $$ by getting a smaller car.

Is there such a thing as a "deal" on a ford? I've heard that they have had some major problems with the new transmissions that they are using.

We've done the same thing for our last 6 cars/trucks... my wife's grandfather worked for GM. He worked for them for 40 or so years and then died a week after he retired.

I'm still waiting for the japanese cars to use this promotion, as the Civic, Accord, and especially the scion tC (not the ugly SUV ones, the sweet coupe) are far superior in my book (the WRX as well, but the insurance kind of ends that possibility).

Does anyone know how this employee discount compares to the one they gave out to employees? Is it the same one, or is it slightly less?

Most cars do not interest me, but $5k savings on a mustang is awfully hard to resist...

Discounts are great... last time I bought, had a relative working for GM, parents with a huge heap o' points on a GM card and no intention of using them, and all the research about rebates I could find. Saved a TON. Too bad the best deal had the leather seats and sunroof... :biggrin:

I honestly had not considered buying a ford, GM or chrysler at all until I heard these promotions... and I'm still leaning towards japanese cars that actually work after a few years. I was surprised to see a few american cars make the JD power quality lists... tho the mustang was the only one I was interested in. The german car mystique sure has fallen off the charts with this surge in quality from japan and now even slightly from america... mercedes made a very bad call when they merged with Chrysler IMO.

Drat, the 2006 mustang isn't available for discount :(

I'll stick with my scion tC plan ($17K loaded, toyota quality, great looks and solid performance):

Yes, the discounts are the same the employees get. Luckily I gave out my 2 employee discounts for friends already this year. The ones I gave out earlier not only gave people the employee discount, but any incentives on the vehicle were still valid...much better deal.

Actually, this deal is nothing special. You will find that this is valid only for 2005 models, and ones that are not super popular models (does not apply for the Mustand, Corvette, 300C, etc.). It's really just a ploy to rid the dealers of the 2005 inventory before the 2006 models hit the lot. Happens every year, but instead of giving larger incentives GM came up with the "employee discount" advertisement. Worked really well with Chrylser and Ford following. The discounts are very similar to what was already out there, and pretty much the same you would have gotten in incentives for 2005 models (incentives are always kicked up this time of year to get rid of inventory). For you Japanese car buyers, they will not follow. They may add some incentives, but not to this amount.

Really, the deals are not a whole lot different except the poor souls that already had the discounts. It costs those people a few grand per vehicle since they got the incentives plus the discount. Now they just get the employee discount, which everyone gets.

To this quote, actually Scion has had some quality issues. Not up to usual Toyota standards. As for American vs. Japanese cars (well, not Japanese, really just Toyota, Honda and Nissan...the rest suck for quality) there is not as major of a gap anymore. After three years, on average, most American cars may have 1/2 defect per vehicle more than the average Toyota (the industry benchmark). There are many GM cars that are more reliable than Japanese vehicles. This could turn into a really long reply, but please don't look at American vehicles from 10 to even 5 years ago.

If you have any specific questions I am more than willing to help out. Let's just say I live the industry day in, and day out. I have worked for 2 major auto manufacturers, one Japanese, and one technically German (I think you can figure that one out).

I personally buy American every chance I get, although for electronics there is not always a choice in the matter. I won't preach about it, and I feel free trade can be a good thing. It's just a personal choice that I feel helps build our economy.
