Context:

As well as setting new linear TV records, Disney also achieved new streaming highs for its tournament coverage on its Hotstar service. The final attracted a peak concurrent audience of 59 million viewers, making the match the most-streamed event ever.

The competition was also the most-attended event ever for the International Cricket Council (ICC), with over 1.25 million people going to matches over six weeks.

Comment:

“Disney Star is dedicated to paving the road for sports broadcast in India and it has been extremely encouraging to see growth across both the linear and digital mediums, thereby increasing the fan base of cricket,” said K Madhavan, country manager and president, Disney Star.

“This is a testament to the uniqueness of the India market where linear and digital continue to grow alongside each other. This successful tournament has set the stage for a promising future in our association with the ICC.”

Coming next:

Disney Star has the rights for major ICC events up to 2027 after paying a reported US$3 billion fee for both linear and digital. Next year, it will broadcast the men’s and women’s Twenty20 World Cups.
