Announcers in the NCAA tournament

Don't know if anyone heard it during the game but osu made a hope at one point and Gus Johnson said"Cold Blooded!!!!" What is up with the rick james song man!

Let it be known I HATE JIM NANTZ! He's always saying "hello friends" and "welcome friends." I am not your F'ING friend Jimmy....do you hear that Jim....god I hate him. He damn near even ruins the Masters golf tournament for me.

People are comparing Gus Johnson favorably to Duke Vitale, Billy pACCer, and Bill Rafftery but those are all color guys. Gus Johnson is supposed to be a play-by-play announcer. He's supposed to be doing a different job from those guys.

That said, I think I came down a little hard on him. He does a good job compared to most, I just wish he'd let the drama and emotion of these games shine through on their own rather than trying so hard to amp it up with his calls.

nantz's staid demeanor during the masters is largely due to augusta national's (the committee) demands. the committee rules the tournament, from tip to toe. cbs has absolutely no say about even their own terms. augusta national requires that the commentators refer to the crowd as patrons. you will not hear a single commentator refer to the gallery as a crowd. they are not allowed to. even the pga tour is subservient.

even the play-by-play announcers provide analysis. i'd like to think that having courtside seats and behind-the-scenes access to countless games provide them with the ability to add something substantive. also, i don't think that an announcer being either a play-by-play guy or a color commentator means anything to his delivery. in fact, if either of these two commentators should provide the punch, it's the play-by-play guy. generally, they're chosen for their delivery. it appears that many here at bp really appreciate johnson's deliver. give me lavin, bilas, or kellogg as the color guy. i'll make do with the play-by-play commentator--whoever it is.
