America's Largest Home: The Biltmore Estate

My sister in law lives in Asheville. We tried to go last Thanksgiving. They were closing it down for a private christmas party, so we went to the Grove Park Inn instead. Also a very impressive place in Asheville.

If anyone is planning a visit, I recommend in the Spring when the azalia garden is in bloom or in December when the house is decked out for Christmas.

The wine is actually pretty good. I buy it in my local grocery store.

Then why don't they? Childress buys all his grapes too, but the wine still sucks! I would think Biltmore uses a lot of their own grapes by now.

Buy better grapes....

Anyway... it depends on the climate, soil etc.. I don't know what they grow onsite... but you wouldn't necessarily expect Reisling and Cabernet Sauvignon to be planted on the same property and perform equally. And you wouldn't want to... what you would do is pant a bucnh of whatever comes out best (if its all whites, for example) and then sell your extra Reisling to the guy who has extra Cab... if that makes sense.

If I had to guess... that area would be a stronger Chardonnay/Reisling area, up in those mountains... based on what I guess to be the growing season... but I could be completely wrong.

Not ot say Biltmore doesn't use "a lot of their own grapes by now" (I hope they use -or sell- all their grapes) I'm just saying that I bet it doesn't comprise 50% of what they sell... probably much less, and always will be.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

i also believe most wines are mixed unless they say "estate" but im no wino.

Sort... even estate wines can be mixed (in any case where its not a single varietal) , also the grapes come from various vineyards that the "Estate" owns and it still counts.

And, as always, these types of terms are abused/loosely used outside places (like France) where the terminology is dictated by law...

Anyway, I was trying to see how much wine Biltmore was growing... coudn' find varieties... except Cab Franc and Chardonnay... but it looks like they have about 100 acres planted, which should yield about 50,000 cases... (A littel more for red, a little less for white) and they produce about 120,000 cases per year...
