America's Largest Home: The Biltmore Estate

tedginn05

Legend
I saw a show on this mansion in NC.

It has 250 rooms!

Was built by the family that Vanderbilt University was named after.

Some interesting facts from the website...

While you are correct... the Vanderbilts did quite a bit more than that.:wink2:

(you don't get that rich sitting around with your thumb up you ass)

Anyway... its far more than a house, its a European Feudal estate in the middle of Nowhere North Carolina. (Sorry about the 'Nowhere' comment, Asheville fans)

Anyway... TG... try to go sometime.. its a magnificent place.

AKAK proposed to Mrs AKAK on the grounds there.

I believe I've told the story in the past.:wink2:

I realize its far more than a house, that is why I said America's Largest Estate. According to the web site, it once took up 125,000 acres in the 19th century. It now has only(maybe only isn't the word) 8,000 acres. As for going, I would love to. But I don't spend much time around the middle of nowhere in North Carolina. Maybe if my family ever goes back down to Florida, we will stop by.

Plus I don't really get the "America's Largest House or Estate" thing. If this ain't the world's largest house, then I don't know what would be.

I'm sure you'll be a grown-up someday:wink2: ... and can go where you want... if you're interested in that kind of thing, it is the house to see.

I first saw it this summer when SportsCenter was doing their "50 States in 50 Days" thing. They were listing landmarks in North Carolina and they showed it. I was like holy shit. They were like "North Carolina, home to the America's largest house at 250 rooms. Where George Vanderbilt built, built and built".

Like I said... check it out... preferably after you are 21... they have a winery on site... hit that before you tour the house, it will be even better.:)

I've been there. Pretty sweet. Asheville is a nice town and not really in the middle of nowhere. If you go, it will cost you $40.
