My experience from having spent a couple months in China was quite the opposite. We actually joked that China was the last place on earth where people were happy to see Americans, primarily because the US is probably more responsible than any other nation for the improved quality of life for the rapidly emerging middle class there since the opening of China's economy. There were definitely still old school Maoists who clearly looked upon us with scorn, but that was the exception rather than the rule. I found the Chinese to be the most honest, peaceful people I've visited abroad. At times it almost felt like those scenes from National Lampoon's European Vacation where Chevy Chase runs over the British bicyclist and otherwise harms him, and the Brit in turn is goes out of his way to be as nice as possible to the Americans.

That's because the Chinese government is currently keeping Japan squarely in the roll of bad guy to feed nationalistic anger.
